Dutch & Dutch 15C Discussion

Whether it’s speakers, automatic Swiss watches or kitchen cabinets, I struggle to see the value in certain goods. On the surface it just seems like a lot of markup.
Not everyone sees value in luxury goods, there is no right or wrong.

But those who do and have the means to afford it, there's nothing wrong with that. . .and apparently luxury goods have the highest sales ever.

I should add that the 15C is much more domestic decor friendly than the Genelecs.
For me, the Genelecs take ugly to another level. For a music studio, I don't care at all. They are after all targeting the professional market, but of they ever wanted to make inroads into the home audiophile, that also has SO approval to deal with, they have a long way to go.

For that kind of money I'd rather get an S Class and a pair of 8C and listen to them nearfield ;)
If you compare a $130k S580 against a $130k speaker, like the Magico S7 that was at Axpona, the head scratching is 2 fold. The first one is what’s in that S580 that makes up the $130k price tag. Then the second head scratcher is given the fact that I can’t see how the S580 can cost $130k, how can the S7 with about 20 parts max cost the same $130k?

I was rather hoping they would be commensurate with the 8381 in terms of price.

And couldn't agree more that D&D is one of th prefer companies to be playing in that space than a some snake oil company.
Agree.
Edit: My only beef is that, if a company sells something this expensive, the materials has to be the most exotic, they better kill a baby unicorn and use the horns to build this product. Better not see the letters "MDF" or the words "fabric" or "paper" in the specs.
MDF happens to be a legitimately good material for speaker cabinets. AFAIK it is a good compromise among all the traits you want for a cabinet. Even if you go with something exotic like stone, it's hard to beat MDF in all dimensions. Magico goes to considerable lengths to use aluminum instead, but it's not as if the speakers stand in a league of their own just for that reason. The fact that MDF is cheap and common shouldn't be held against it! :)

Cost-cutting is certainly out of the question at $130K, the highest performing materials should be used throughout as long as there's some audible benefit... but performance and glamour don't always go together.

Agree.

I completely agree and understand the benefits of MDF. My only point is that when one is spending $130k, you have to feel like you are getting $130k worth . . .even if there are no audible performance gain, so long as there aren't performance degradation.

For instance, take the Koenigsegg car, they have a rule that any visible interior parts, must be either metal, carbon fiber or leather. You won't get much performance gain in weight savings since plastic is already light, but you sure as hell get luxury gain.

For $130k pair of speakers, it needs to look and feel luxurious . . .$130k worth.

TBH, even if D&D don't sell any of these, they must be worth it as a marketing tool for the more accessible products, there's been a lot of online buzz.

Also fun to see Amir and Erin squidged onto the same sofa.
It’s nice to see Amir and Erin sitting and smiling together. They have both done so much to inform consumers with objective analysis in an industry plagued with propaganda.

Can you say “Veblen goods”?

At todays total of 450 posts, I would venture a bet that's more posts than pairs of speakers D&D will sell ???
YMMV
