Dune 2021

I apologize in advance if the question is off-topic.
Did you have any [ummm...] consternation about [ummm...] having to wear masks?
I have not come to terms with a 2-hour soirée with peeps that I don't know in a cooped-up place.
Watched it at home.

Again and again I find I'm lonely or among very few who really likes the Lynch version.

Now, if there are some cineasts among you, you might find this piece of cinematographic history fascinating. Lynch's version really started before he took over. He wasn't even in the picture. It was a project that a much, much liked, almost cultish director Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted to make and he picked non other than HR Giger to do the props. The project stopped only after a lot of artifacts were made and some money already went into it. It needed to be finished as they believed they will save some money that was invested.

This is why I simply loved the design and although I see many people hate this version it left a deep impact on visuals of later adaptations. (In fact, people who really love Lynch, hate this movie and people who don't care for Lynch often like this Dune)

Personally, I was even satisfied with how Sting played his role (otherwise I'm not a big fan). The Baron (Kenneth McMillan), Duke Leto (Mr. Prochnow), Linda Hunt, Leonardo Cimino Paul L. Smith...

Must have seen it for a thousand times. There's a documentary on this version.

Not a fan of Lynch but loved the movie.

Who else has played the video game by Westwood?
Not me, but I did play a tabletop game before I saw the film. That may have got me past the confusion so many people have when they see it.

Will have to look that up.

You haven't read the book then? I liked the original and I thought the first trilogy by Frank Herbert's son Brian and his coauthor Kevin Anderson was good too.

Watched it yesterday and I loved it. Having read some of the books from the huge series and watched the previous movie, I was not expecting much. But wow was I impressed. First the sense of scale and epic of the world building. Then the entire ambience that was created, both visually and musically, is what caught me by surprise. And a very nice pace and visual effects and I was very impressed. Definitely looking forward to the 2nd movie as the story was halted in the middle. This one deserves to be collected in a steel box blu ray one day when they come out.

a very nice pace
Oh man, this is probably one of the best things about the movie. It's really slow compared to the current action-packed high-speed blockbusters. But Dune by contract is slower and deliberate, but it still keeps you hooked! A very nice contrast.

Did anyone see it in 3D or IMAX? I've seen the 3D version. Was quite nice as well, but sadly the 3D technology of the local cinema has some blooming and crosstalk issues. For IMAX, the trip was a bit too long.. possibly next time I'll do it.

yes I saw the IMAX Version in Paris. Pathé de la Vilette. Not the 3D Version. It's impressive.

I don't want to start a pole but it would be interesting to see how many fans of the Dune trilogy will do a few refresher courses (online reading) on Dune legacy prior to watching the new 2021 release.
One realization for me was the inter-connection [?] of the Dune story to the current petroleum issues that are playing out at the international stage.

Just did my first watch via HboMax last night. Finally Dune done right. While not completely perfect or in line with the book. I enjoyed every second of this new reimagined vision. 5 Stars for Video and Audio quality as well. If you read the books, this new film actually lives up to the grandiose vision of the Novel. A great ride from start to finish.

Quite excited about it, planning to get the UHD disc.

I think it's doing relatively poorly - financially speaking - and there's a lot of doubt on the follow-up ever being made, which is a shame. This being a very expensive movie, it needed to do well. Fingers crossed, I loved the books!

I think most of part 2 is already shot, so actually the investment was for multiple movies already. It would not make sense to not release the second one as well.

I heard specifically the opposite! Let’s hope that your sources are the correct ones.

Movie Critic Joe Morgenstern of WSJ (2021/10/22) states that the "part 2" is still a 'if/when' dealio.
Regarding Hans Zimmer score, he ends his review with:
"Hans Zimmer score may not be a crime against humanity, but it's a shattering assault on tympanic membranes. In that sense, the theatrical experience continues after you've left the theater."
Hmmmmm...!

Yes, I’ve heard it both ways as well. I think most of the investment into the sets is already prepared for the next movies. I’m not sure how far filming has commenced though.

I'm also one of the very few, I watched it obsessively, almost every day for a month in the mid 90's (having read the first 2 books in the 80's). I must have watched Lynch's version 60 or 70 times by now :)

I personally haven't been in a movie theater since the summer of 2019. I've watched the 30 first minutes of Dune 2021 at the comfort of my home. While the Atmos soundtrack and the 4k HDR10 is quite good, the movie plot is too boring to really enjoy the special effects. I gave up after 30 minutes. Do you really have ushers flashing torches at your face to check for compliance in the middle of the movie? In my country you must be fully vaccinated to enter any public place. They enforce vaccines instead if masks.

I re-watched it recently and thoroughly enjoyed the first half. I thought the set-up of the world and characters was pretty good, even the minecraft personal shields! Amazing what they could do with low-tech special effects. The second part though felt rushed and rather poor quality. Like they ran out of time.
