Hi everyone,
Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is now on the market via TCL and I find two wireless, freely positionable and self-calibrating speakers really interesting.

Fraunhofer has developed something similar, let's see how it positions itself on the market.

The summaries are from an AI.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is a new technology developed by Dolby Laboratories that aims to bring immersive Dolby Atmos sound to your home—without the hassle of cables or precisely placed speakers. It allows users to position wireless speakers anywhere in the room, and still enjoy a fully optimized surround sound experience.

The system uses automatic calibration to map your room and determine the exact location of each speaker. It then fine-tunes the audio output for each unit, ensuring that no matter where the speakers are placed, you get balanced and directional sound that adapts to the space. This makes it especially useful in living rooms with awkward layouts, minimal space, or aesthetic limitations.

One of the key benefits of FlexConnect is flexibility. You can start with just a single speaker and scale up to as many as four FlexConnect-compatible speakers, and the system will automatically detect and integrate them. There’s no need for a separate AV receiver—the TV itself acts as the hub.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect debuted in TCL's 2025 lineup of QD-Mini LED TVs, specifically models like the QM6K, QM7K, and QM8K. The first speaker made for this ecosystem is the TCL Z100, a wireless speaker with an up-firing driver for Atmos effects, a built-in microphone for room calibration, and a sleek design.

A matching subwoofer (Z100-SW) is also planned. The speakers can be placed virtually anywhere—in front, behind, or beside you—and the system will still deliver a spatially accurate audio experience.

Setup is simple:

1. Power on a FlexConnect-compatible TV.

2. Place the speakers wherever they fit best in your space.

3. Start the automatic calibration process.

4. Enjoy Dolby Atmos sound that adapts to your room and listening position.

The technology is designed for ease of use and accessibility, bringing high-end audio closer to the average consumer who might not want to deal with speaker wires or precise positioning. For now, FlexConnect is exclusive to TCL TVs and speakers, but Dolby has hinted at broader partnerships in the future.

While traditional high-end systems may still outperform it in sheer audio power and dynamic range, FlexConnect offers a compelling alternative—especially for users who value convenience, clean design, and the ability to adapt audio to real-life environments.

Fraunhofer upHear Home Entertainment

is a flexible and powerful suite of audio processing technologies developed by the Fraunhofer Institute. It enables immersive, spatial audio experiences across a wide range of consumer devices—including TVs, soundbars, smart speakers, and even mobile phones—without the need for complex hardware setups or precisely positioned speakers.

At the heart of the system is upHear Flexible Rendering, which allows users to place wireless speakers anywhere in the room. The technology automatically detects the number and location of speakers and adapts the audio rendering in real-time, ensuring a consistent and immersive 3D sound experience regardless of speaker position. Whether you’re watching a movie, listening to music, or playing games, upHear can turn stereo or surround sound into a spatially rich audio field.

One major advantage of upHear is its broad device compatibility. Unlike competing systems that may be tied to specific brands or ecosystems, upHear can be implemented by manufacturers across many types of devices. It works in TVs, home theater systems, headphones, laptops, and mobile devices. This gives users more freedom to enhance their audio setup using existing equipment, rather than investing in an entirely new system.

In addition to output rendering, upHear also includes sophisticated microphone processing. This improves voice quality in calls and video conferences through AI-driven voice isolation, noise suppression, and echo cancellation. It can even identify individual users by voice fingerprinting, making it useful in multi-user environments.

On mobile devices, Fraunhofer offers a lightweight version of the engine called upHear Mobile Audio (formerly known as Cingo). It enables realistic 3D sound with head-tracking, ideal for XR (extended reality) applications, streaming, and gaming—all while keeping power consumption low.

Compared to solutions like Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, which also supports wireless speaker freedom and automatic calibration, upHear stands out through its brand-agnostic approach and standards-based architecture (e.g. LC3plus codec for wireless communication). This makes it attractive not only for manufacturers, but also for users who want flexibility and future-proofing.

In short, Fraunhofer upHear Home Entertainment is a highly adaptable and scalable audio platform that brings immersive sound to virtually any environment. Whether in the living room or on the go, it enhances both playback and communication through intelligent, real-time audio processing—without locking you into proprietary ecosystems.

No reaction, which I find strange, because some people here are also interested in the integration of Dolby Atmos.
What I like about this system is that integration seems to be completely problem-free.
I'm curious to see when other companies besides TCL will jump on this bandwagon too.
