Came across this review of the original Yamaha Aventage RX-A3000 on Audioholics. It seems this initial iteration was likely the one that was engineered really well. At least the measurements are looking really good, especially HDMI in pre out distortions.

Can someone dissect these measurements? The reviewer is calculating DAC/preamp SINAD of around 107dB, is that correct? I see the FFT distortions are below 107dB with 1 volt output.

Edit: amplifier section does not look too shabby either.

It is very hard to convert them to SINAD/measurements I make. Input is -20 dBFS and I use 0. And output 1 volt instead of 2/4 volt.

And he was talking about the 2nd harmonics only.

"Driving the RX-A3000’s HDMI input with a -20dBFS signal, I adjusted the volume control until I measured 1Vrms via the preamp outputs., The RX-A3000 displayed an excellently clean FFT distortion profile with the magnitude of the 2nd harmonic of (-.733 +108.15)dBv = 107.4dBv or 100*alog^-1(-107.4/20) = .0004% THD + N."

It is still excellent results even if you double that number to include the 3, 4th and 5th harmonics. He might just happened to have a good sample because the volume control for the RX-A3000 was done with a r2a15220 FP LSI chip that would struggle to achieve even 105 dB on its own. The DAC is an excellent PCM1796 that has THD+N spec 0.0005% that is equivalent to 106 dB SINAD.
