Does ASR need a safe word?

I and another person here in another thread were back and forth on an issue until we stopped after I sent an animated gif of a cat wanting to hug. I suppose he accepted the hug :)
I most definitely did accept that hug!

great, as if having insomnia for the last half year ain't enough...now i might be even scared to fall asleep and dream of a bunch of audio enthusiasts wearing squeaky gimp suits...

I feel that the vast majority of us are adults and acting as mature adults is expected in these forums. Some common civility and tolerance goes a long way! Shutting down threads is a "throw the baby out with the bathwater" approach and should be avoided if possible. Those folks who you you might find distasteful or insulting, simply block them. Otherwise, we should simply agree to disagree and move on. :)

To be honest, I don’t know what is Safe Word is or how it would operate. Is this some sort of forums thing that I’ve somehow missed over the years? Can anybody explain exactly what it means?

I think the mods do a fantastic job here. I find their interventions and mediations to be reasonable and nuanced. And it’s a thankless job to begin with. I also recognize that, though I largely align with the ethos of this forum, and as polite about it as I try to be about my quibbles around the edges, my pushback has sometimes resulted in heated exchanges (and I’m not putting all the blame on the other parties).

Personally, when it comes to forums in particular and life in general, my approach is to keep bridges and communication open with those I disagree with. You’re less likely to find out you are wrong by sticking only with people who agree with you, so I’m not a fan of bubbles and echo chambers. For the same reason I have never Blocked or ignored somebody on any forum (and only finally did so with one individual here because we were constantly running circles on the same track, and my blocking is done with no grudge whatsoever) .

This forum does a good job of allowing disagreements to play out. Not surprising I think because the founder himself is well-known over over the years to have done plenty of battle in some forums :) So some spirited dispute is not automatically squashed. Which is one reason why I often push back on other forums whenever ASR is characterized as a cult or echo chamber.

Nah, it's not a forum thing... it's a sexual thing, whereby @pablolie suggested we apply the concept to the forum when discussions start to go awry. :D

But…What Is Hip?

One of my favourite songs to play in the Funk tribute band, in which I was a keyboardist for many years.

Do you even have to ask?

Very off topic of thread/

I grew up with a gigging musician/music teacher father. He played all this stuff. And we would play it in stage band, and I grew up, loving funk and dance music where horns were always featured. This is the 70s.
I was a huge fan of the Commodores, and it wasn’t until the mid 80s that I actually got to see them live at Ontario Place in Toronto.
I remember we got there early and saw them setting up and doing a little bit of sound check. “ where are the horns?” I was wondering. The answer came not long after when some keyboard, dude who didn’t even look like he belonged in the band, started playing some really crappy horn samples on the keyboard, and I’m like … oh no!
And sure enough, the horn section has been replaced with those keyboard samples, which sounded like shit. So disappointing. But this was part of the disappointment in the 80s when everything was going synthetic. Drum machines replacing drummers…. Drummers wondering if they were even going to be of use anymore… keyboards, replacing everything. And it’s in the 80s my buddies and I got together to form a huge funk tribute band To play all the Earth, Wind & Fire and Commodores and other fun stuff with full horn sections and like. People loved it because some had been clearly craving some of the live instruments aspects that was getting been lost to early keyboard technology.

Anyway, that video was such a great blast from the past. Those guys were so insanely tight!!

/off topic

I wonder what that would sound like on a multi channel system :)

There is the problem right there. To work, a safe word must be universally accepted. Trolls are never going to do that.

I find the best safe "word" is the ignore button. I don't always succeed, but if I feel my buttons are being pushed, I'll use it - not as an "I'm never going to see that person again" but as a method of taking me out of that particular conversation: Ensuring that I'll not see anything provoking me to respond.

As often as not, I'll later see that person participating in a thread - have a little peek, find they are being perfectly reasonable. I'll then unblock them again.... until the next time. There are a small few - perhaps only one or two - who I now recognise just rub me up the wrong way whenever I engage with them. They remain blocked, as do the obvious trolls.
Sometimes the "Report" button is a better option... and I've reported myself a couple of times when I've had a bad reaction from someone.

it's not always "their" fault, after all.

Those years were so great—such a simpler time. I know I sound like everybody's mom and dad, but I can't help but smile when I see performances like these again.

Maybe as well as a like button we could also do with a “over reaction “ button, this would be best if it sounded a klaxon on the said person’s device if they got more than a few hits on it
