Does anyone else like FM radio?


Radio Shack, at one point, ripped off paid homage to the Henry Kloss aesthetic in radio tuning schemes. :)
I do not recall any of the many non-Henry authorized ones having a Vernier geared down precision way of tuning. Just cheap to a market that accepted sort of look-alikes without the precise functionality.
For those not familiar with Henry Kloss (and his protégé Tomlinson Holman [patented 5.1 surround sound and many other audio related things]):
Kloss gave millions of people the gift of music. That's a rich legacy.

In Grateful Memory: Henry Kloss
June 17, 2002 - Earlier this year, one of the giants of sound, Henry Kloss, 72, passed
away. Kloss had a hand in founding acoustics companies KLH Research and
Development Corp., Advent, Acoustic Research, and Cambridge Soundworks.
But more impressive than the companies he founded are the numerous products he
invented, including the first high-fidelity FM table radio, high-fidelity cassette deck and
big-screen color TV for the home (see table below).
Kloss exemplified the stereotypical image of the brilliant, quirky inventor. "Henry was
immune to fashion," says Tom Hannaher, vice president of merchandise at Cambridge
Soundworks and a longtime friend, citing Kloss sartorial touches like using a paper
clip to anchor his tie and wearing shirts far beyond their lifetimes.
Like many creative geniuses, Kloss was a reluctant entrepreneur: "He never really
wanted to start companies," Hannaher says, but the big companies that he pitched his
ideas to failed to share his vision.
Kloss's impact on the acoustics industry cannot be understated. "Before Henry, all
good-sounding stereo systems had speakers the size of refrigerators," Hannaher
says.
His acoustic suspension speaker, the AR-1, was the first small loudspeaker that could
produce low bass. Kloss's KLH Model Eight FM table radio was the first device of its
size that could reproduce music accurately and lock into a station without interference
from other signals or stations. The KLH Model Eleven was the mother of all stereo
systems. "It was the first three-piece stereo," Hannaher says. "Every boom box, every
shelf system, every stereo with detachable speakers is an offshoot of the Model
Eleven."

Obituary:
Known for his numerous inventions including the acoustic-suspension speaker and the large-screen
projection television, Henry Kloss also founded four successful consumer electronics companies.
While a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during the early 1950s, Kloss
and some friends designed the first acoustic-suspension speaker, considered an audio breakthrough
that popularized high fidelity sound. The invention's success encouraged Kloss to drop out of school
to start his own manufacturing company, Acoustic Research. Kloss and two partners later formed a
second business, KLH, where Kloss created the KLH Model Eleven, the world's first compact and
portable stereo.
When Kloss sold KLH, the inventor turned his attention to the video market. It was Kloss, while president
of the KLH Research and Development Corporation, in Cambridge, Mass., who pushed Ray
Dolby to bring the B-Type consumer system to market in 1968. (C-Type was introduced in 1980.)
Kloss had an engineer construct a quick version of A-Type to show Dolby, that ''if I could do it,
somebody could bootleg something like it.'' The result: Dolby developed its own version--first in a
reel-to-reel deck produced by KLH, then in a cassette deck made by the Advent Corporation, founded
by Kloss in 1967 with the goal of producing projection televisions.
Advent also manufactured and sold loudspeakers. Kloss, an Audio Hall of Fame member, introduced
his first projection television in 1973. In 1977 he became founder and president of Kloss Video
Corp., where he invented the Novatron(R) projection tube that employs built-in mirror optics as a
means of improving the efficiency and performance of projection television.
Kloss' fourth business, Cambridge SoundWorks, a subsidiary of Creative Technology Ltd., manufactures
more than 40 different models of home stereo, home theater and computer speakers.
In 2000, Kloss emerged from retirement to team-up with long-time associate and former Cambridge
SoundWorks co-founder Tom DeVesto. DeVesto's company, Tivoli Audio, manufactures Kloss' latest
designs, including the critically-acclaimed Model One AM/FM mono table radio and the 2-piece
Model Two stereo radio.

A Notable Passing: Henry Kloss

Maybe you noticed the recent passing of Henry Kloss, since it was an event covered
by the New York Times (February 5, 2002) obituaries, and by National Public Radio, a
downloadable audio version of which is archived at http://search1.npr.org/opt/ collections/
torched/atc/data_atc/seg_137575.htm. But then again, for younger people in the
business, and for those with no connection to the consumer side of things, maybe you
don’t even know who he was.
Henry Kloss probably had more to do with how sound is heard in the home, and how
pictures are made for a certain level of home theater, than just about anyone. As a
24-year-old in 1954, he did most of the production work on the first acoustic suspension
woofer/box combination, the AR-1, following the theory of his instructor Edgar
Villchur. Henry was already in the loudspeaker business, and he saw real market possibilities
in this invention, and he and Villchur capitalized the company to exploit the
idea. Using the air in a sealed box as a spring relieved the loudspeaker from doing
this duty, and as the air was a more linear spring than the mechanical suspension of a
loudspeaker, there was lower distortion than prior designs. It also solved the problem
of “big bass from a small box,” and the acoustic suspension (or sealed box as it is
perhaps more commonly called today) became the stalwart of the industry.
“What really caught the public fancy, however, was the fact that the original Acoustic
Research AR-1 was a small loudspeaker system having essentially flat low-frequency
response down into the 40-Hz region. Other manufacturers were quick to point out
that the AR-1 gobbled up about 10 times the electrical power needed by larger, more
efficient systems. With 40- and 50-watt amplifiers becoming available, this turned out
not to be a major drawback, and the trend toward smaller, less-efficient home loudspeaker
systems was firmly established.
It wasn’t until 1960s, when Neville Thiele started making sense of those electromechanical
analogies in Beranek’s book, Acoustics (coincidentally published in 1954),
that the vented box was properly quantified. It took years, and Richard Small’s work
also, for ported enclosures to come into common usage by the late 1970s. Today’s
loudspeakers having dynamic drivers in boxes have to be said to owe the most credit
to Villchur, Kloss, Thiele, and Small.
Henry left AR and formed KLH with partners in 1957. It was here that he ventured into
other audio systems, such as a high-quality table radio and those three-piece systems
having a record player and electronics in one box and two loudspeakers, all in a suitcase
arrangement, that zillions of people took away to college or on vacation. In loudspeaker
design, he supported Arthur Janszen in making full-range electrostatics, the
KLH Model 9, as well as making the best-selling bookshelf loudspeaker of the 1960s,
the Model 6. To push the theory of loudspeaker design, he experimented with making
a loudspeaker with flat power response (100-percent dispersion of flat response in all
directions), and discovered that this design was hideously bright on program material
— another nice theoretical construct hung up on the grounds that it simply didn’t work
in the real world.
Moving to Advent after “L” and “H” bailed on him, he heard the first LP that used
Dolby A noise reduction on the master tapes, and was so impressed with its dramatic
decrease in tape noise that he tracked down Ray Dolby on the phone — in half an
hour — and went to see him the next afternoon in London — to talk Ray into making
a consumer version of the system to fix the plague of low-speed tape recording, tape
hiss. Applying noise reduction first to a KLH open-reel deck, which he built at Advent
for KLH, was the introduction of Dolby B to the world.
The logical successor to the KLH 6 was the Advent Loudspeaker. This best-selling
model of the 1970s combined quality and reasonable price. One of the ways that the
price was kept so reasonable was by doing quite a bit of the process of making the
speaker components in-house. For instance, a slurry was made basically by putting
grocery bags into a Waring blender with water and chopping them up to the right consistency,
then sucking on the mass through a filter to produce a limp cone, then
pressing the cone shape, then finally treating the paper cone with orange bulb dye
from the hardware store to stiffen it and make it less porous. The cone-shaping dye
gives a measure of how good Henry’s seat-of-the-pants design engineering was. Here
a male and female part mate with the cone trapped between them under pressure.
The exact cone shape is determined here, and it is a non-conventional central dome
centered within a larger radius annular ring, a kind of top half of a donut sawn through
sideways. The idea was that, as frequency goes up and cone losses become greater,
the area of radiation shrinks to that nearby the voice coil, maintaining dispersion. On
the other hand, the relatively large overall diameter provided good low-end (for a
tweeter) response and power handling. Really a brilliant piece.
More brilliant than we knew. After hundreds of thousands of these things had been
stamped out, and the original drawing lost, the response changed, and it took months
of work to figure out something that Henry had sketched on the back of a napkin
some years earlier — the exactly optimum shape.
These would be feathers enough in the cap of any audio inventor, but I was absolutely
astonished when I interviewed at Advent in the spring of 1973. What I was shown
during my interview was not an audio product at all, but instead, sitting in a darkened
room in a dingy part of Cambridge around the corner from MIT, sat a 7-foot diagonal
large-screen front projection television! It had brightness that reached motion picture
standards, and few theaters of the time even met those
Henry transcended audio then, and did for some years to come, essentially starting
the home theater business. Meanwhile, he was up to a few things in audio, too. Henry
fully recognized the value of surround sound, but not its quad implementation, which
was essentially dead by the time I got there. We built the Advent 400 table radio (and
I learned a lot just from that) and the 300 receiver. I remember Henry’s joy when I
spent a weekend with foam core making a model of how to put together the receiver
mechanically using monocoque construction — there was no identifiable chassis as
had always been used up until then.
It was an amazing time. Henry had assembled a team that was talented, bright, and
loyal. Most of us have never worked again in a place so filled with competent people.
While there’s a New Yorker article waiting to get out about what it was like to work
there, just one story suffices to tell what kind of a man he was:
The company got into trouble — after all, it was a pioneer in the projection television
business, and you know who the pioneers are — those guys with the arrows in their
backs. A new set of managers bought into the company, but with Henry still there.
They cut back salaries by 15 percent, and it was understood that these cutbacks
would be paid back when the company was on its feet. Of course, it never was in the
consideration of those managers. At Christmas, Henry came around with Christmas
cards. Inside each envelope was cash in the amount that the company had cut us,
making us whole.

Henry Kloss:
The Man Who Changed Audio and
Video -- Time and Time Again
Henry Kloss died early this month at the age of 72. If you're an audio- or videophile to any extent,
you probably owe him a huge debt. I know I do. When I first became interested in hi-fi, I was lucky
enough to purchase a pair of Kloss's Larger Advent Loudspeakers. No, that's not a typo -- that's the
kind of company Advent was. At the time it made two models of loudspeaker: The Larger Advent
Loudspeaker and The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker.
Combined with my beloved AR turntable (post Kloss), those remarkable speakers hooked me on the
sound of reproduced music and gave me thousands of hours of musical pleasure.
Later in life, after having sold all my hi-fi gear to go and live in Peru, I purchased another AR
turntable, an Advent receiver, and a pair of AR-3A loudspeakers upon my return to the States. Now
that was a system to reckon with!
More recently, I reviewed Kloss's valedictory effort, the Tivoli Henry Kloss Model One Table Radio.
One wasn't enough. Now I own two.
I couldn't even begin to guess how much musical pleasure I've derived from Kloss's well-designed,
reasonably priced products over the years. But I'm not alone -- the man revolutionized the audio
industry.
Let's go back to the early 1950s and survey the audio scene. Hi-fi was a burgeoning hobby and the
LP record had newly arrived on the scene -- making it possible for enthusiasts to reproduce sounds
across the sonic spectrum. Dynamic loudspeakers were huge boxes -- one capable of reproducing
40Hz needed to be about 14' tall. Movie theaters had 'em, but homes?
Edgar M. Villchur, a teacher at NYU, hit upon a novel approach. By sealing a speaker's enclosure,
he could use the springiness of the trapped air, rather than the mechanical spring of a driver's suspension.
"All I needed to do," he told Steve Birchall years later, "was to decimate the springy stiffness
of the speaker suspensions, and reduce the size of the enclosure until the air spring was
strong enough to replace the springs we threw away. It also turned out that within the compressions
and rarefactions this air spring would undergo, the response was almost perfectly linear." Thus was
born the compact, full-range, air-suspension speaker.
Except for one small detail. Nobody wanted it. After having been rejected by the two established
speaker manufacturers he'd approached, Villchur was discouraged. Then he received an expression
of interest in the design from a former student, Kloss, who was building Baruch-Lang speakers for
mail order in his Cambridge workshop. In late spring 1954, Villchur demonstrated his prototype to
Kloss, playing, among other LPs, an E. Power Biggs record with massive pedal tones. Kloss immediately
grasped the possibilities and offered his Cambridge loft as a manufacturing facility. Acoustic
Research (AR) was born with $4000 Kloss raised from his friends and $2000 from Villchur.
Kloss immediately threw himself into the partnership. Villchur credited him with 75% of the produc-
tion design of the AR-1. Villchur and a physicist friend, Tony Hoffman, contributed the rest. They
managed to assemble two AR-1s in time to demonstrate them at the New York Audio Show in
September 1954. Astonishingly, the critics didn't "get" it. Although they were impressed by the
speaker's clean 32Hz bass response, they didn't understand why anyone would want "miniature"
loudspeakers. Julian Hirsch was particularly puzzled, noting "The AR-1 had the lowest electroacoustic
efficiency of any loudspeaker on the market," but at least he recognized that "at 25Hz and
below, it was more efficient than the Klipschorn, which had the highest efficiency of those tested."
He grudgingly allowed that the AR-1 "established a new industry standard for low distortion bass."
The public, however, had no problem grasping that the AR-1 delivered big speaker sound in a small
package. And, while the speaker did consume a lot more power than the efficient designs it outsold,
this was the golden age of great 40-50W tube amplifiers, which were easily capable of driving it.
Villchur and Kloss had succeeded in taming hi-fi for the masses. With the AR-2, they lowered the
price of the speakers to $89/each. The model AR-3A introduced the dome tweeter -- which is now
nigh unto ubiquitous.
Kloss left AR to found KLH in 1957. In the early 1960s, Kloss built the first high-selectivity FM radio -
- the KLH Model 8, now considered a design classic. He also designed the first successful audio
product to employ transistors, the KLH Model 11 portable phonograph.
In 1967, he founded his own company, Advent, where he offered well-designed loudspeakers
employing premium-quality components. His speakers were the reference standard of their era. In
fact, the first issues of The Abso!ute Sound touted a pair of stacked Advents (an upside-down
speaker on top of one standing right-side up) as its reference.
Kloss always claimed that the audio side of Advent was merely a means to produce the funds to
develop his true passion, projection TV. Advent produced a two-piece projection system that ended
up primarily in bars, where it displayed sporting events - ironically, this was before the VCR and the
concept of watching movies on video existed. Kloss refused to take credit for "inventing" projection
television, insisting that it was less an invention than a collection of practical electrical engineering
knowledge. Despite this avowal, he is considered the creator of the industry.
Kloss also developed the Advent Model 200, the first cassette equipped with Dolby B noise reduction
-- which, of course, was the missing element that made music recorded on cassette listenable.
One of the two times I met him, he described his cross-country flight to persuade Ray Dolby to
license him the technology. "I knew that if I didn't get some sleep on the flight over that I could never
be sharp at that meeting," he told me. "So I went back to an empty row of seats in the middle and
slept on the floor under them. The stewardesses thought I was insane, but I got eight hours of
sleep!"
Kloss later founded Cambridge SoundWorks, a company that pioneered direct-to-the-consumer marketing
before the creation of the Internet. The company advocated small satellite speakers and modestly
sized centrally located woofer units, as well as surround-sound and computer speaker systems.
Kloss sold the firm in 1997.
He wasn't done. While at Cambridge SoundWorks, he had developed a high-quality radio -- the
Model 88 Table Radio -- which was reminiscent of his classic Model 8. In 2000, he went back to
table radios one more time, creating the Tivoli Henry Kloss Model One Table Radio, a design that
exploited advanced engineering techniques that allow cell-phones to deliver crisp, clear sound from
marginal signals. To a generation raised on disposable portables, it's a revelation -- a $99 radio that
looks good, sounds good, and is built to last for another 20 years.
It's a fitting legacy for the man who never set his sights on anything less.

Bought a Tivoli model one when they first came out for kitchen duties ideal with a dock/iPod at the time and followed it up with the Tivoli Pal for work and taking away in the car for weekend camping at the mtb races, still got the pal and it still sounds just as good but very scruffy looking after 20 years of abuse
 
We gave our daughter a Tivoli PAL when she matriculated into college in 2002. She and her husband (and kids) still have it. Still works & sounds great. Yes, quite scruffy, and the battery pack no longer holds a charge. Ol 'enery's radios were very fine, all the way back to the first, the KLH Eight, which came to market in the early 1960s. :)

Had a colleague at work who had one, in beautiful condition, in his office. AFAIK he bought it new and used it for decades. Probably still has it. :)

I do wish I had one of those!

I do have a KLH 21 (its solid state counterpart, with the loudspeaker in the same cabinet as the electronics) in pretty good cosmetic condition -- but it needs some rehab (bad filter capacitor in the P/S, so it's hummy).

Actually the Tivoli PAL would be fine.
But the only thing that I have that Kloss actually had a hand in is the ADVENT 300. And the subsequent result of the research done there by Tomlinson Holman, a pair of APT/Holman PreAmps. And many Lucas film (Tom, again with the THX sound DVD's, Blue Rays and some THX compliant AMPs.

On July 31, 2026, KCAL-FM (@96.7MHz) laid off its entire on-air staff and transitioned to a fully automated, "human-less" music format effective August 1, 2026.
The station's owner, Anaheim Broadcasting Corporation, confirmed the shift to an "All Music, All the Time" classic rock format.

OT: The layoffs impacted all on-air personalities.
KCAL-FM first signed on the air in 1965, establishing its presence in the Inland Empire (SoCal).
Sister AM station KCAL's faith (on air 1954, @1410kHz) is not known… yet.

Showing my age here...but I have fond memories of growing up in the 70's listening to my AM-FM transistor radio tucked under my pillow listining to ball games and Dr Demento. It was the only option we had but still found great stuff to listen to. Now the accountants have taken over and stations are always on the cusp of vanishing forever. We live in the age of so many choices it is crazy. Just my 2 cents...

Considering the success of Radio Paradise and Spotify playlists, which are both effectively 'radio' without any on-air talent, I'm not at all surprised that some FM broadcasters are dropping on-air voices, most of which are voice-tracked anyway, not really live in the studio. Less voice, more music (and ads!)

Fortunately here our regulator won't allow FM stations to do that, but I can see that the time will come when that's the only option, that or the stations shutting down.

It was the only option we had but still found great stuff to listen to. Now the accountants have taken over and stations are always on the cusp of vanishing forever. We live in the age of so many choices it is crazy. Just my 2 cents...
Same experience here. Grew up in NYC area (born 1959) and spent many hours listening to FM classic rock stations (WPLJ, WNEW) , Good memories

We had a couple of great (play whatever they want or was requested [sometimes album sides, some commercials & then maybe the other side of the album, or 4-5 minute songs that gave time for the song to bloom, maybe a good 3 minute song {in my mind, there are very few of those} Dr. Demento, whatever) radio station from the early 1970's-mid 80's with absolutely GREAT local personality DJ's (BETTER THAN ANY I've heard ANYWHERE since):
WWWZ and WAVE (who did local wave reports, along with the weather, for the surfers).
Our local craigslist currently shows 4 different Tivoli models (=pre-owned).

Thanks for the suggestion of a place to look. Some (many) years ago I looked at Craigslist locally and decided that it had nothing of interest to me. I guess I'll have to look at it again.
My Audio budget for this year is done (a few things still committed to) but things like getting eave vents for the house (it has NONE, for some unknown reason), raising the back half of the house an inch & a half to match the front, have made sure that I don't have any extra that I can allot to the audio gear fund this year.

I have given up totally on the "radio scene" mainly because of the air-wave commercialization , which we grew-up with in the 1970s..
Same experience here. Grew up in NYC area (born 1959) and spent many hours listening to FM classic rock stations (WPLJ, WNEW) , Good memories
Indeed, good memories of 1970s' NYC WNEW-FM... or for that matter; LA's own 1980s' KROQ (106.7MHz).
But I have not given-up (yet): Mainly relying on print-media (newspapers and magazines) as my primary news-gathering sources.

The 21st Century media, as a whole, leaves me want of un-distorted news feeds.
Yet, all have gone partisan and inescapable: Be it physical, airwaves, and/or online.:(

So sad. KCAL-FM used to be a progressive, free-form "underground" FM station.

I show my age more than you.
I have given up totally on the "radio scene" mainly because of the air-wave commercialization , which we grew-up with in the 1970s..

Indeed, good memories of 1970s' NYC WNEW-FM... or for that matter; LA's own 1980s' KROQ (106.7MHz).
But I have not given-up (yet): Mainly relying on print-media (newspapers and magazines) as my primary news-gathering sources.

The 21st Century media, as a whole, leaves me want of un-distorted news feeds.
Yet, all have gone partisan and inescapable: Be it physical, airwaves, and/or online.:(

Oh, good, now we can try to combine the elements of 3 partial lies to see if we can come up with the real truth (I guess, that statistically, with potentially more total information, it's possible). On the other hand...???

Radio outlasted typewriters, calculators, pagers... even landlines.:)
Yes, silver lining I suppose. When my beloved mum passed, everyone said "at least she went peacefully", "she had a good run" etc

Some of the for-sale "Tivoli Satellite Radios" have built-in Sirius.
Some of that some contain an EasternEgg, but only if you can find one for sale.
That easterEgg happens to be "Lifetime Sirius Subscription".

I also remember WNEW in NYC broadcasting live concerts from the Capitol theater in NJ. I remember recording an entire Springsteen concert ( 1976?) to 8 track ! Its still in my closet somewhere. I think LOL

It is unfortunate that every thing is saturated of ads. I must shut down the receiver during them. Large time I don't listen FM, I have 6 clandestine emmiters around me. The FM receiver I did several decades ago when I was still learning electronics (TDA7211+TDA1220b) is far from perfect, and atrong interferences are are receiver.
Fortunately Gemini told me a way to avoid them at internet.

Several years ago I build a refined AM tuner (not audio stage to be a complete radio) using tubes, and using concepts robbed from other sources like TV receivers. For those who are interested in how I designed it, here is a link to DIYAudio.com. And as I told that, using a good receiver, AM is also capable of good audio sound. Again, extensive ads are killing it, I suppose with the intention of force listeners to intenet apps and avoid TX costs.

Another very unfortunate fact is that radio programs are using exagerated use of YT, so regular ether listeners are marginated of such stuff. I believe that they ignore that radio (both AM & FM) are companion for those who can't have their eyes on a screen (truck and taxi drivers, for example).
