Do You Think This Is Too Eccentric?

I have a pair of speakers that I like very much, Monitor Audio Silver 100 6G. I don’t want to replace them entirely. I also want to hear something different. I am curious about the sound of active speakers, like the Kali in-8 v2 for example. Would it be considered eccentric to buy a second pair of speakers then rotate each pair into service periodically? That seems like it would be fun.

I have two sets.

The little JBLs for daily econo-use.

Fire up the big stuff when I feel like it.

Sure, just don't use both at the same time as they will interfere with each other. Been thinking about dragging my old speakers out just to see if they sound as God as I remember.

Is it considered eccentric to own more than one headphone?, ;)

Go for it. You may prefer them

There are people on this site with like, 10 pairs of speakers they rotate through depending on mood. I myself have different sets in the living room, office, and guest room.

I think speaker ownership becomes "eccentric" when it begins to affect your finances and/or personal relationships. Until then it's just a hobby. ;)

You have got to be kidding, right?

The difference is more in the speaker design itself rather than whether one is passive vs active...but to compare them fairly level matching/blind conditions would be a good start.

Oh, and let's not forget this is ASR, so while you do have folks like @mhardy6647 here (that's who I had in mind with my previous comment) on other forums we're apparently considered the boring, lifeless ones who don't even like gear that much.

So 7-8 pairs of speakers per room is really no big deal, I think. ;)

There are no limits. It is pretty common for recording studio mix rooms to have 2-4 nearfield monitors plus their mid- and far field monitors, using them all, sequentially.

Three suggestions.

1 Get Room EQ Wizard free software and a calibrated microphone.
2 Make friends with other local audiophiles, even recording studios, listen to, and measure their rooms and speakers
3 Add acoustic treatment to your room based on #1

Multiple sets of speakers are fine.

There are many ASR threads and Q&A on Room EQ Wizard - REW. There are threads on individual ASR contributor room measurements.
