Do You know Anyone Who Doesn’t Like Music?

I read this some time ago, I forget the source. . .but according to science humans are the only living species in this world who are able to decipher music as music (meaning there is a cultural significance and it's enjoyable) vs all other animals decipher music as noise or sound and some as patterns of sound. This has to do with the way how our brains are wired.

Having said that, I don't think it's physically possible for a human being to not enjoy (even to a minimal degree) music at all. Maybe they don't enjoy listening to it often, but to absolutely not like music, I simply don't think it humanly possible.
Obviously you have not met my wife.
But, working in places where music was on all the time, I can kind of see it...(sort of [I think], {maybe}).

I don't think it's possible to prove that.
Not saying this proves the opposite but:

Did you miss the posts about musical anhedonia, or do you not believe the studies of it using functional MRI?

I did missed that post.

But that is a deviation from the human species' standard brain development. If we are taking that into discussion that of course it's possible.

It's humanly possible. I had a foster parent who did not like any kind of music and would tell me to shut it off if I played any on my setup. She never turned on a radio or anything else that could play music. Thankfully, I had a set of headphones for listening to it. She'd have a radio on, barely audible, tuned to an all news talk station that she did not pay attention to. She ultimately ended up in a facility for the mentally impaired. Alcoholism played a role in that as well. I had run away as a teenager, unable to tolerate her. Her husband died from alcohol overconsumption.

Over the years I have come across several people who did not care for music. They did not hate it, they just did not care for it, in the sense that they would not mind if they never heard any kind of music ever again during their lifetime. Almost all of these people, interestingly, loved TV.
So next time you come across such a person, ask them if they could live without music or without TV for the rest of their lives, what would they choose. It is a fascinating experiment.

With age, I actually prefer interviews and podcasts while I drive, rather than trying to play loudsr than the road noise. On my 6 hours drive home from work yesterday, I regularly used my Philips over-ear anti noise headphones, to give a little peace. They are also nice for phone conversations, since most small ear sets are utter crap when it comes to sound quality.
And sometimes... Just silence, and listen to the motor and the mechanisms of the car moving you forward.

I'll confess I don't like most contemporary popular music. I listen to about 98% Classical. The residual ~ 2% is Jazz and a little vintage, '60s thru '80s Folk and Rock. My wife listens to the excellent, (for most people), contemporary programming on CBC Radio 2 but to me it's mostly just noise.

OK, I'm 80 y/o, but my "residual" listening portion never ran higher than ~ 30% in my youth. I've tended to Classical since my 20s.

My wife is fine without either. She suggested that we get rid of the TV in 2007, so we did.
I either do not play the stereo when we are together (such as in a car), or (at home) wear headphones (which I despise) if she is also home.

Same here, except I got rid of the wife !
It's better company and never nags me to do some project or whatnot.

I never married or had a room mate, so I can have any ol' ugly home-brewed tube amp or speaker anywhere I want it. I gits to listen any time I want to.

My cat will come and lay down between the speakers when I play calm music. Boli will also look at the left or right speaker when some stereo effect captures his attention... :-)
My cat is the same, she likes electronic music especially something with swirling stereo effects, which she follows.

Then there's this:

Most days mine cooks from scratch breakfast & dinner, helps me with my 91 year old mother, pays her own way (& then some [she has her own money]) and generally does not have a "Honey Do" list of any length (and, when she does, she is rarely [if ever] in the "I want you to do this right now" mode.:

and she also does this (by herself [she never said a word to me about it, in fact, I wondered where she was, as her car was at home but she wasn't in the house]):

So, I think that I will keep her around.
