Hi

I have 2 DIY projects which need some advice:

Bass traps:

I want to build a (broadband) bass trap, but can I use acoustic felt (pet felt 9 or 12mm) instead of cloth to cover the traps? (so felt on the ouside I mean, to cover the insulation).
--> ...my partner... :) prefers the look of the felt... over cloth...

I want them 35/40 cm deep , because of the depth of 35/40 cm, would you go as low as 25 kg/m³ density for insulation? Or is 45kg/m³ better?

Acoustic wall:
Also , because she doesnt like panels all over the living room, I want to cover the back wall (the wall at the other end of the room to where my speakers are) allover with wood slat panels with insulation behind.
The panels also use the acoustic pet felt if I am correct.
I can get away with a total depth of 20cm. Is it a good idea to put insulation behind the slat panels, or is that a waste of money?

Thanks very much for your help, its much appreciated.

David,

If by slat panels you refer to diffusers, IMHO the padding is not needed. However, if your idea is to deaden that area, that combo should work.

Can't opine on depth of bass traps. What i can comment on is that I did the same you are doing in my prior room. All treatments and traps were mounted in and some on the walls and then all walls were covered in Guilford fabric to hide it all. It came out very clean and elegant

Let us know how it goes!

ps, where are you located? I got great treatments from Poland at a very good price

With slats i mean somtthing like this:

acoustic pet felt:

My main concern is that the sound waves would not travel through the felt (and into the insulation..)

I am from Belgium btw

Thanks for the clarification, for those types, Yes i would use the felt.

I'm not an expert but did you measure the room? "Diagnosis before treatment". It's a good idea to measure before and after.

Have you done some research about the thickness of bass traps and what percentage of the surface area that should be covered?

Ethan Winer (one of the founders of RealTraps) has an article about building a membrane trap: Build A Better Bass Trap.
