DIY 3D Speaker Scanner - the Mathematics and Everything Else

I tried to follow along, but a little confused. Can you confirm the following:

1) The robotic arm hardware is not ready as an open source yet.
2) This software will work independently of the robotic arm by taking your manual measurements to perform the algorithm to produce anechoic data.
3) Does this software have the robotic arm control software?

2) https://github.com/dfapinov/lah-scanner : The postprocessing
3) https://github.com/TomKamphuys/NFS : The control software

EDIT: understanding some materials need to be customer CNC.
I don't think so, at least not last time I looked. It was a mix of off the shelf bits and 3D printing. The closest it got to CNC was cutting the extrusions to length. The mechatronics side isn't prescriptive so you could adapt to what's available locally anyway.

Sorry, I meant 3D printed parts.

I think Jan put the BOM's in excel files, see here for an example:

I think Jan got the extrusions from France and the electronics from tinytronics NL (?). @fluid is also building one, but some of the parts that are easy to get here are very expensive in New Zealand(?).

I don't believe I saw a list of build of materials (If there is, sorry I missed it).

Will there be one in the future and even more helpful where to source it?

I think it is a work-in-progress. The BOM are in the XLSX files under the individual sub-assembly folders. For example for the hub arm subassembly.

The contents of the XLSX.

The 3D CAD models are in the STEP files in their corresponding subfolders.

Unfortunately, I don't have a mechanical engineering background, so not super familiar with CAD tools, 3D printing, motors, actuators, etc. I'm sure I can figure it all out if I have enough time, but at this point I don't have the time investment.

This is a great opportunity for a company like audiophonics or some other DIY vendors to source all the parts and assemble the robotics arm to sell for a profit. I would pay for the convenience.

How do we set the calibration file of the mic in HALS controller?

Jan got the extrusions from Systeal. Most of them are off the shelf V-Slot which can be bought from many different places. The main 100x100 extrusion is not easily available from anywhere else and Syteal will not ship outside of Europe.

There are other manufacturers that make similar but they were unreasonably expensive for me in Australia and would still have needed the 3D parts to be altered. The Gravity stand that Jan used was also much more expensive here than it was in Europe and there proved to be no real suitable alternative (off the shelf) for that either.

So I have had to re-engineer that part of it. There were some challenges to get the movement correct but it seems to have worked. When I am confident that it works properly I will explain what I did and how to do it and that can be added to Jan's Github page.

It currently looks like this

For anyone else, do not underestimate what Jan has done, it is a mountain of work that needed deep knowledge. It would be dissapointing to have some third party company take all that effort and profit from it.

Hope that this helps fluid. You are moving along faster than I am.

This is getting built here to. The first one will follow as closely to Jan's system as possible and then I will build a stronger one. I have client with enormously heavy loudspeakers.

I whole heartedly agree that this should stay open source. Not for profit. The mechanical work is Jan's and what a job he did! Respect!
Once I figure out all the finer details if anyone is looking for help I will be available. But I have to get my printer up and running first. Nothing mechanical scares me. But I do have a DDD printer learning curve to get over. I have sourced a few other components in Canada. 100 x 100 extrusion I have not found at a more reasonable price than this in the link. That company actually makes 200mm x 300mm should anyone have need for such an item.

I guess you are trying to prove my point that extrusions exist that are wildly expensive and will still need the 3D files to be amended to fit ? :)

That costs nearly $500 AUD and is not a drop in replacement. Jan also looked to see if he could find an alternative but he could not find anything just the same. My solution was available locally and cost $30.

Mine uses 4mm walled structrual aluminium tube. If you can build a speaker that would be heavy enough to be a problem getting it onto and staying on the platform would require some serious effort.

If you don't want to spend the money on the extrusion and you have got your printer dialled in send me a message and I can give you the files to print the alternative bits. I'm sure you are capable enough of drilling a few holes in aluminium to make it fit.

Have you tried to see if you can get the profiles from Bosch or Item in Australia?

Well, that's it's not exactly the same I agree. Not meant as an insult in any way. Yes, if that 100100 extrusion is Europe only I do not think that we have any other choice than to come up with a reasonably priced alternative. And adapt the parts that mate. I can't find a 4 channel 100100 extrusion. Even the ones that claim Euro Standard dimensions.

As for $500 I am a bit puzzled. The Canadian dollar and Australian dollar are not to far part in purchasing power.

No because anything that is not available off the shelf locally to me can be a pain to order and the price to ship usually doesn't make it worth the effort to waste anyone's time sending emails if there isn't a webshop with a price already.

I searched for a long time and have found just about every available 100 x100 extrusion but I cannot find another that has this profile. I'm sure it exists somewhere as I doubt Systeal make it themselves, but it was actually easier for me to redesign the plastic parts than it was to keep searching.

The centre also needs enough free space to accommodate the main pole tube and bearings. That was the reason most of the Aliexpress ones weren't worth pursuing. I wanted to use my own pole mount so there was no real value in trying to find this exact part.

You are right, that price was when I looked on my phone and must have been for a bigger one. When I went back and chose the same options it was the same price here. Long delivery, increased cost and still needing to redesign is what put me off.

Looks like Item has a webshop in Australia. I am not familiar enough with the design to judge if the clearance is sufficient. Probably need to download the 3D model to check since the catalogue doesn't have all the dimensions. Their Australian shop needs an account to show price. The US shop price is USD $167.64 for a 500 mm long piece.

Understand that you probably already have a solution. Just wonder if this is viable an option for others.

There are a few problems with getting something close but not quite. The first is clearance inside, without a decent dimensioned drawing that can be hard to know. The other is where the slots line up on the outside. If they aren't in the same place then the angled support bracket will need alteration.

I did find this from a company in Melbourne when I was looking, but no price, a long way away and still not a drop in replacement made it not worth pursuing.

You can be sure that I have spent a very long time looking at Jan's 3D model in Fusion to try and understand it :)

Why not to design an aluminum extursion as acousrically-tranparent as possible? That wouldn't cost that much to build the extursion die and make the needed profile as cheap as possible. Just saying...

But wouldn't you want people to benefit from this full system? I'd be happy to test it, but I have zero time to do anything but purchase the full thing as a kit. So then someone has to offer that.
