I hereby proclaim victory! After spending countless hours with REW and moving things around, I think I ended up with about the best FR is could get with both my room and equipment. The major problem was room modes and greatly exaggerated bass. I bit the DSP bullet and got the Minidsp SHD Studio. I gotta say, the learning curve was a lot steeper than I anticipated. But all's well that ends well. After letting Dirac do its magic the improvement was quite amazing.

The system seems to go lower than before but without being overwhelming or muddied. Imaging and soundstage are superb (though they were already good to begin with). But the bass bloat is gone, it's well defined, clear and smooth across the whole FR. Really, really great! Now I finally understand what all the fuss is about. And all this is a pretty basic setup - the SHD Studio is just 2 channels and the 2 subs piggybacked onto the main speakers. No low pass, high pass stuff. Maybe that's the next step. Regardless, the subs were already as "integrated" as I could get them by playing with MLP, positioning, phase, XO and levels, so Dirac didn't have to overcompensate for that.

So I'm psyched! Thanks to all who helped though this whole process, starting with the room itself. This journey has taken 8 months and lots of $$$ but it looks like it was worth it. :D Cheers,
