Last year I entered a competition and received a Synology DS225+ NAS to review. While the picture above shows a Mac mini, the image production is mostly done on a PC and the image library shared between the two machines connected to a NAS. I went on a journey of discovery with upgrading the network from 1GbE to 2.5GbE to finally 10GbE and updated the PC internal SSD to NVMe to take advantage of the additional performance.
While the DS225+ has 2.5GbE network connectivity and plenty of performance, my submission prevailed and I received an DS3622xs+ which has 10GbE network connectivity and which improved productivity by an order of magnitude compared to the RS815 I had been using for years previously. I photograph events and there can be hundreds and sometimes thousands of images to import and post process. The new hardware and network upgrades make post processing images much faster.
If the technical look behind the curtain is the sort of thing that you find interesting the links to the original article and the follow up article below. What is not in the follow up article is the performance of the NVMe after installation into the PC at 3500MB/s, another big step change.
