"DHCP sounds worse than a fixed IP address"

Just ignorant people revelling in their ignorance. Pointing out that I can transfer an audio file back and forth between two computers on a networking using a $30 switch and $15 worth of ethernet cables literally 10,000 and it'll be bit-for-bit identical to the original file when that process is complete does not penetrate their brains.
Facts and logic are so 2019, these days people want 'Woo' :D

Actually, I did make quite a nice upgrade over the past couple of days.
Furniture moving!

I discovered I rather like my speakers far apart, the expanse and space is so much nicer when at least 12' apart.
And then after I'd unplugged and re-plugged everything I thought it all sounded rather better!
At least, this is what Jenia Lubich informs me, and Ingrid Michaelson agrees! :)

This probably points towards me needing some ACF-50 (Or failing that, 3-in-1) on the contact surfaces, to keep them all nice and happy :D
And not one new network switch, just the usual old Netgear one shoved in a cupboard :D

Actually - my music client, eventually running sox, is actually on the same box as the server - so I'm using localhost - not even a network cable. I'll habg my head in shame now...

You should ad an extra network card so that you can stream the audio trough one of those audiophile network switches and back to the server ;)

Indeed.

My background is (was, now retired) software development on mission critical, high throughput data interchange backends (typically with a database on at least the receiving end but more generally on both the send and receive), hosted on Unix then latterly Linux, all predicated on sockets and the TCP/IP stack at the lowest level. So have some understanding of this.

These kinds of stupid proclamations used to drive me mad and I would try and help the poor souls that brought into it but I don't bother any more...it's their money and if they don't have the wherewithall to do some basic research as to how ethernet and tcp/ip work then...whatever.

Do you have Black Friday specials on your routers...if so might pick one up next time around.

I've only got this far into the thread, but you need to take note of the manufacturer claiming this. I only know of them as some ex Linn amp owners have changed over to this maker as a perceived 'upgrade' No measurements or much 'technical info' at all, last I looked...

I know the senior chap at the UK Melco (streamers, switches and so on) distributor, who explained that the subjective difference his very) expensive routers and streamers was 'back of room' reverb and atmosphere that 'ordinary' routers and so on missed out on. Thing is, the Dynaudio Focus 50 wireless active towers (all in £8700pr) did this superbly all on their own when fed from a local wireless audio source (NAS? I'm not so well up in this method of music delivery).

It's amazing how many of these claims can be boiled down to "audio is magic" and can be rebutted with:
