Usually the line out on the motherboard has a fixed output level. To adjust the volume an external device is needed.

I use software volume on MR5 connected to PC. Each mobo has a soundcard, and often a great one. That makes RCA fine to me. Good point was made about setting the volume. I start the day with automation (MR5 mixes PC and 2 mobiles):
Windows: run "nircmd setsysvolume 8192" in task scheduler upon boot to set e.g. 20% volume (0..65535 range)
Android: bixby routine -> set volume at morning
