In japan, the audiophiles there value much more thé Denon pma3000ne over most accuphase amps ..

Go to France, there's a accuphase small community that won't even look at denon but pay 20k euro for an amp ... With 15ke Lost in transports, tax, sellers margin etc etc ... And they are happy with this idea to pay premium

Go to Denon, you have real engineering at appropriate prices

I'd love to read more about this, if you happen to have any keywords or forums I can visit.

I've watched several Japanese YT reviewers and they're very polite; very rarely do they criticize a product and they will say I "I like A more than B because of X and Y" but very rarely will they admit something is downright bad. The part that I'd find interesting is how they compare Denon to Accuphase and similar brands, seems like a fun rabbit hole for an afternoon read.

Personally I haven't owned Denon gear since the 90s, but back then I wasn't worried about SNR, crosstalk or distortion I just wanted something reliable that rumbled my room windows and sounded pleasant, which they never failed to do.

It just happened i went there for work couple of times and spend saturdays in shops. I didn't say they would have criticised accuphase or other brands, i just understood Denon was thé equivalent if you're looking for japanese state of the art electronics
Worth to mention, second hands are in the same price range

Denon is very well respected in audio gear in Japan, and think they value brand longevity in this country

Ive just sold my Hegel H390 and bought a s/h Denon PMA 1700ne.
I’m using the Denons Dac and it sounds lovely through my Kef R3 Metas.
No regrets whatsoever.

What is interesting in your feedback is that you come from a Hegel h390 with much more power on paper and sold at 3 times the price of the pma1700ne and still have no regret in the change.
Plenty of audiophiles would have gone opposite route and spend more money on a device than they currently own expecting climbing the ladder in quality

I’ve been in and out of hifi for the last 45 years and have climbed the latter to around the £2000 ball park with amps and I’ve had few over the years.
I bought the Hegel used for £3100, it was only three months old and had for 15 months and enjoyed it.. Big sound and bags of power when if you need it.
I was never really happy with it at lowish volume levels though, in the past I owned a Denon Pma1600 ne and I liked it, so I bought a s/h PMA1700ne for £700 and I don’t miss the Hegel. At the levels I listen at I find the Denon to be more enjoyable.
I must say though, when you turn the wick up, the Denon had a huge sound stage, just don't think they’re worth the money at nearly £5000 new.

How (or why) would an amp change sound stage?

I have no idea, but it can and in the case of the Hegel H390, it does.
No, not an amp property. Poor testing can come up with a lot of strange conclusions, tho.
