?Even connecting the PC to an AVR is already more complex than what most people would have the patience for.
- Plug HDMI into GPU, plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the Input of the AVR.
- Tell Windows to use 5.1 / 7.1 whatever
- ....
- Profit.
Windows set to 5.1 -> Halo Downmix to 4.1 because I cannot fit a center speaker (TV as monitor wall mounted right above the desk).
I reckon THAT is definitely way more effort than the average surround enjoyer is willing to do.
Sounds pretty darn good though, to the point that I shy away from buying a new AVR because it just feels ... lame to spend like 2 Kilobucks for a more convenient system that sounds the same (barring Atmos capabilities that I currently lack but I am unsure how well Atmos would work with a 4.1 system).
Because they use it as a form of DRM. Same reason why UHD Blu Ray Discs and PC playback do not get along at all.The problem is indeed decoding Atmos. And it does not seem Dolby is very willing to help pc users in that department.
So if you are into high quality movies and like optical Media, there really is no way around an AVR / Processor.
