They sure have been, constant new Dolby formats, new HDMI standards etc.AVRs are worse than average in terms of planned obsolescence*, it seems to me (anecdotally), in that regard.
But nowadays, I am not so sure. I think with 4K120/8K60, VRR, eARC (uncompressed multichannel capable), Dolby Vision (a 12 bit technology when our panels can only do 10 bit). Add the slow death of physical media and gaming being nowhere near a point where 4K120 / 8K60 is mainstream viable with all the eye candy enabled, so 8K120 won't be a thing anytime soon.
I think we've reached an end-point in home theater. Where do we go from here? What core HT features could we update that would make an e.g.: 4800H obsolete in the same vein that my 10yr old Yammy was holding me back?
If obsolescence happens in HT, I'd say it would be in the Display sector. OLEDs only have a limited lifespan by design, app support in these smart TVs could go bye bye at any moment... Heck, my poor X900F (barely 6yrs old) is already incapable of providing stutter free playback from it's internal apps!) new, better display tech is on the Horizon (µLED).
