Denon AVR-S970H after Audyssey calibration: pretty low volume?

I set up a 5.1 speaker environment (2 front, 2 height, 1 sub) for my Denon AVR-S970H today. I did the normal (?) 6-measurements Audyssey calibration run. I’m halfway OK with the result, but the overall volume seems to be pretty low to me: I have to turn up the volume to at least 40% to have a sufficient volume level – which is unusual compared to other amps I was using in that room.

Is that what was to be expected with Audyssey? If not, what can I do to improve the volume situation?

Any sort of DSP room correction will inevitably reduce headroom.

By how much, depends on the resulting filter response.

Maybe I should repeat the measuring, now with the sub’s volume know turned to max. The sub’s test tones seemed to be a little muted to me, during the first run.

Normal is 8 measurements, but I doubt this makes a difference to overall level. The overall level likely depends mainly on the first measurement round.

You said the overall volume seem to be low, but based on your second post, is it really just low bass you think you are missing? The sub's test tones should never sound very loud.

Unless by unfortunate chance your sub vs microphone positions are in a deep null, turning the sub 'to max' is likely to cause Audsyssey to lower it to the max (-12 dB) which is not what you want.

One thing to make very sure of, is that there isn't ambient noise interfering with the measurment cycles. Things like HVAC humming for example.

Normal is 8 measurements

I believe it is only 6, if you have a 5.1 setup.


Regarding low volume:

Tried the Audyssey MultEQ Editor app (20 €) today, with little (if any) success.

Looking for a web version instead, I found Audyssey MultEQ-X – but it seems one has to buy a »licence« at some 200 € for it to use ...
