Denon 2023 range X3900H/X4900H/X6800H announcement....!!??

Apparently the 3800 supports AirPlay2 but I can't stream Dolby Atmos MCH from my iPhone 14 Pro (latest iOS) to the AVR (only stereo). Luckily I have an Apple TV4K where I can directly stream Dolby Atmos from the Music app if I need to.

Curious what makes the 3900 different?

Any device running iOS 18.
You sure you're not talking about streaming from the Music app on your phone to an AppleTV? In that case you're not really streaming from the phone, it just tells the AppleTV to play it directly, which would be in Atmos format if that's what you selected. But the stream is internet > AppleTV > receiver. Not actually via Airplay. This feature has been around for a while, don't know when it started, but well before IOS18, I think.

More importantly, which Apple devices can stream Dolby Atmos over Airplay2?
FYI: For reasons I don't understand, Netflix does not support use of AirPlay...

I’ve not had an opportunity to try it, but yes, according to Apple Airplay now supports Atmos with compatible receivers and speakers.

Scroll down to the “Now in more speakers than ever” section.

Dolby also maintains a site for developers with instructions for adding Atmos over Airplay support here.

I’m familiar with the handoff that Airplay does when sending audio to AppleTV or HomePods, and I don’t *think* that’s what’s happening here, but not having compatible equipment I admit I haven’t read too deeply into it.

Looks like a Heos update possibly and ios18 means the x800 units should be capable of this as well. I have Apple TVs so I haven’t tried but I will later on my 4800. From that article linked from Dolby Professional above the terminology used will be
AirPlay 2 with spatial audio

Well that's interesting news, and cool as hell. I was not aware of that, thanks for explaining this. I guess it's not of a great deal of use if you're already using an AppleTV for music, but sounds like it would let you stream a multichannel movie from your phone if it's not available on the AppleTV. On the other hand, a great new feature for those not using an AppleTV.

Well I tried it yesterday streaming music from my iPhone using AirPlay to my 3800 and only got a stereo signal. I guess the 3900 qualifies as "receivers need to support AirPlay 2 with spatial audio"?

I did as well and got the same. If the processor is the same in the 3900 as all the x800 as I believe I read above somewhere I would think Denon would roll out a HEOS update that would enable this function at some point.
