My 2009 17" mbp is finally dead, after 13 years of 24/7 use, a ram upgrade, new battery and ssd it's finally died.

I couldn't have be happier with its longevity, cost me about £10 a month overall.

But now I need to replace it. I have 600tb of music files in ALAC, maybe 50tb of genuine HD stuff from 2l.no and the like.

I'm happy with iTunes/audivana, I don't stream from the Web, no spotify or amything else. I'd rather not use some NAS but similarly don't want pay 1tb of apple storage in an m1 air pro. I just need clean usb out and ability to control via phone app.

Any suggestions? Mini and usb dock/stand with internal ssd?

What do you rate?

I assume you mean GB? A dock like a Targus would provide lots of USB 3.0 which can be fed by a good-sized SSD.

Yeah, I'd think the Mac Mini would be a good replacement for you. Or if you wanted another laptop perhaps the upcoming in a month or two Macbook Air.

A refurbished MB Air M1 is also a possibility and well under $1K. You get the added benefit of a screen and keyboard and as it has no fan there are no moving parts to die on you.

IF you love it and want it repaired Louis Rossmann and his computer techs can fix any Mac Book.

I wouldn't want to ship it from LA to NYC anyway.

If you want good suggestions we need some context:

What’s your budget? Is it relevant?

Use case? Do you still need a portable machine? It’s a server? The 17” was a Jack of all trade beast.
Nowadays there are few uses for that kind of machine and you may be better served by a combination of specialised items, like an iPad + Mac Mini, for instance, or a M1 Max MBPro, if power is what you need.

If I were you I would check itunes on your mac can be controlled with an app on your phone. I know it could be done with the old itunes version but things changed since 2013 or thereabouts. I know because this was what I wanted at the time. IIRC itunes can now only stream directly via your phone over airplay. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Given that the above is correct, I would suggest a macbook for daily use, but for music something else. The main challenge for a streaming solution imo is the software on my phone. I haven't found one that's perfect although there are plenty that are cheap and good enough. Mo0de is good, hifi cast ok) Apparently Roon is very user friendly but it will cost a lot.

Choice made. New m1 imac with 500gb. Just moving my library over to my 1td card, 2 hours to go, then I'll just mount that on the back of the screen and connect via short USB c- a cable.

I had a permanent audivarna licence on my old mac, looks like I'll have to go to subscription now. Boo.

Seems like a sensible choice for them. Not everyone wants to stream and those that don't are less likely to be pay by subscription.

I'll be switching over to this
