dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

This is shameful behavior by dCS, pure corporate bullying. Back when I was a subjective fool, I did covet dCS products, hoping to someday be able to afford them, viewing them as the ultimate upgrade on the digital side of things. Those days are long gone, thanks in part to ASR, and companies like dCS and MSB have shown themselves to be snake oil charlatans of the highest order. They exist to fleece the wealthy, selling severely overpriced luxury to the insecure. I'm angered deeply by this. DACs are a solved problem now, there is simply no need to spend more than 3 figures on one, much less 6.

Just another vendor to take off the shopping list. I love it when they make the decision process so easy! ;)
Were they ever in your list? ;)
dCS make good gear, but are waaaay too expensive for average guys.
Their potential client base, mostly, don't even read any objective based reviews anyways, and equally, average guys (with limited funds) don't either, so why the hell did they make so much noise, and bring the review into the limelight?

Well if you put it that way. I am very far below average and it has taken me decades and decades to achieve that lofty goal. :p

I am also concerned about the lawyer that went through with this. Surely they would remind them that waiting 2 years to make a case against then little known reviewer would not remotely pass the small test of it damaging their business. I know my attorneys would tell me this if got that far.

In Canada a civil (The Court of King's Bench I believe it is called now.) case may be compensated for up to 6 months after. That is what every judge that I witnessed decided.

One must ask why they have waited 2 years to get to this point? One can imagine that sales within their business are poor, and they are looking for reasons why they are failing, so jump on a 2-year-old review and think that’s it!!

I’m guessing the cost of their products and the increasing popularity of measurement-based review sites such as this one are truly hurting what they are trying to sell. I’ve never listened to any of their products so can’t comment, but I would say that for maybe 95% of people they are just not affordable.

They have just ruined what business they have and in such spectacular fashion as well.
95%? That's several orders of magnitude too low, even for "audiophiles".

Where does "two grand" come from?

Kudos to Amir for primarily achieving this. No more FOMO and a good feeling to know that you can get a SOTA device for that little money nowadays.

While everyone is uniting against this scummy behavior, I bet you head-fi won’t choose to disassociate with this sponsor. They wont lift a finger for even their most popular and respectable members if it conflicts with their tune payers. #fake friends.

In my experience the customers are confusing, they might not believe in measurements, but they believe the products are excellent and don't like facts confusing those beliefs.

From the dcs "our story" page
We are performance-driven in every aspect of our work and this commitment to innovation in digital audio has allowed us to create a series of inspirational products that are both award-winning and standard-setting in measured performance.
They are promoting measured performance as part of the story, they don't want people looking behind the curtain.

Indeed, when a $9.95 DAC is (likely) virtually undistinguishable from $100.000 models..
Interesting times we're living!!

Peace.
LoL... I was one of the people that was ordering in US ~$60 little 24 bit USB DAC PCBs from Hong Kong in the early'ish 2000s? It was about that time and we had no idea if it was real or not... LoL. They sounded fine.

Well... they were already off the shopping list with their DACs costing more than entire endgame Audio or HT Systems... for performance that can be matched (or perhaps surpassed) by products costing 1/1000 ...

Peace.

A Bartok streamer (any dCS product?) for €19.90? I'll buy a few thousand and make some money selling them to all those deluded Topping users!
;-) ;-) ;-)
