Dayton Audio SPA300-D Subwoofer Amp Review

This is a review and detailed measurements of the Dyaton Audio SPA300-D subwoofer "plate" amp. It is on kind loan from a member and costs US $180.

I tested it with the configuration as you see. I wish there was balanced XLR input as these amps are prone to ground loops over long RCA connections.

Dyaton Audio SPA300-D sub Amp Measurements
We start with our dashboard of 40 Hz into 4 ohm load with the gain set to 25 dB:

This is dismal performance with copious amount of harmonic distortion. I later discovered that this can be massively improved with Bass Boost turned on (but read later):

Noise performance is very good based on the two such amps I have tested:

We yet again have a mandator high pass filter for low bass:

I was hoping bass boost would defeat that but as you see, it just pushes up the existing response way high, removing any sense of flat response. Both settings result in nearly 8 dB of drop relative to 40 Hz.

By accident, I started testing the power vs distortion test with bass boost still on. I was shocked by the much better performance as noted above:

Not that it is easy to live with that Bass boost as to get this performance the way it screws up frequency response.

As if to curse me with more testing, the roles reversed with 2 ohm load!!!

I went back and re-ran all the tests to make sure this is the case and it was. I have no explanation of why the boost filter has this dual personality. As is, it makes the amplifier unusable. So I stopped testing.

I had run the warm up test before running the above measurements:

I repeated the test twice and that start up glitch remained.

After testing, the top plate of the amplifier was noticeably warm.

Conclusions
There is potential here but it is screwed up somehow with that bass boost circuit. I am at a loss as to what it does as it improves the performance at 4 ohm but reverses with 2 ohm. If the company (or whoever designed it for them), had performed a modicum of measurements, they would have found this issue. But they haven't, leaving us with major flaw here.

I can't recommend the Dyaton Audio SPA300-D subwoofer amp.

Its great to see these amps get tested. I have an SB Acoustics 12" subwoofer in a sub box I made that needed amplification. I'm staying away from this one.
 
Wow these plate amps seem unpredictable. Really interesting tests, thanks Amir.

Last sub I built for the attic has a Wavecor 12in driver in a sealed enclosure. It's being driven quite happily by a little TPA3116 board. Living room subs have plate amps though. Luckily, thanks to ASR, I now know how to tune/tame the output with software....
 
I think there is a high end market for these. We rebrand them and sell them for $3,000 a piece marketed as custom tuned distortion that carefully recreates natural listening spaces.
 
I suspect there is a plethora of plate amps with mediocre testing performance. Best bet is to pick up something like a Buckeye plus DSP of choice. I know, significantly more expensive, but probably your best bet.

If you really want the plate form factor, PE also sells Hypex plate amps, 250/500w for $350/500. I have no objective testing data, but would suspect much better performance. and flexible dsp. The 250w one is twice the price of the Dayton, but, well, you get what you pay for, I suppose.

How about someone pick up a hypex plate amp and send it to Amir ;)

"Subs in the Attic" sounds like it could be a straight to video psychological thriller.
 
When you combine the reliability issues of cheap sub plate amps with the now known performance and FR issues, it seems like these are best avoided. For DIY you can get proven bullet proof performance with low distortion and high power and useful DSP and protection circuitry at a reasonable price with a Crown or similar PA amp.

Maybe. So far the testing has only been of pretty cheap models, unless I missed one, and it's a very small sample size so it's certainly not clear this is the norm even in that market segment. I'm sure there are good subwoofer plate amps out there, just have to find them. Hypex surely makes good plate amps. Anyone have one to send to Amir?
 
Poor little guy. Sad to this performance. The tested amp powered a 10" in-ceiling subwoofer in our bathroom. Really, no complaints, and with the shower going, I never heard anything but clean bass. This was before the red paint job, which was done to match some other red furniture. Then it got moved to a media closet for the "bathroom sub" LOL! I like the wood.

Isn't this the very plate amp Wilson Audio uses in its priced like a new Toyota Corolla Loki subwoofer?

I bet the driver cost them $200 or less and the cabinet, even with their “special” finishes less than $500, so total cost about $1,000. That is some amazing markup.

What a profit margin! Hard to believe!
 
Honestly, although this is poor performance in a way, in another way, it's not... All the distortion products are mainly 2nd through 5th. This type of distortion is so common in subs that most folks actually expect to hear some of it. People often complain about high end low distortion subs not having enough bass, punch, etc etc because they are so used to it.

At low to medium levels, this PE amp kinda sounds like a tube amp. Many will like it at the right volume.



But this is in contrast to a distortion spectra like below, which is truly bad. No masking going on for those higher order products. This graph is an old Silver Flute 8" woofer (yeah, I know, not very good, but that is the point) struggling with a single 60 Hz test tone... The 2 through 5 distortion products are bad, but worse yet are all the higher order products. Those are not masked and sound quite shrill.

It's all relative, so here would be a "better" performing driver. I'll pick a Parts Express driver from years ago. (not really shilling. Long story. Used to test and evaluated some of their drivers, but that was decades ago. No particular affiliation anymore with PE. Could show a Scan Speak, but then I'd be shilling them...;)

The problem with distorting testing, is that the testing is often best done as a comparison. You don't know the SF is bad, until you see the Dayton. (or the Scan).

Not to hijack the thread in any way, just pointing out that lower order distortion products in sub amps and drivers are pretty common, and our brain just processes these as overtones and richness sometimes.

Of course not us of course. We at ASR are immune and not fooled by that lower order sweet sounding tube distortion like pattern. Right?


(Sorry about the tube amp dig. I grew up on tube amps and would love to have a nice McIntosh sitting in my living room. More for show though-but maybe not totally... Like a classic car...)

Hypex surely makes good plate amps. Anyone have one to send to Amir?
Someone did a few years ago. I could not get it to produce any signal and owner wanted it back so I didn't get a chance to test it.
 
I can live with poor distortion but that HPF kicks in way to fast for a sub.

Don't know what kind of "minor modification" Wilson done but secondhand crown DSI with 12v fan mod works way more reliably with DSP capabilities for me.

Problem is Crown also has mandatory HPF so search for the perfect budget sub amp continues...
 
Garbage. I have an old sub that is toast. Plate amp is aged and driver surround was foam and now is 50% gone.

Was thinking Dayton plate amp. Not this one.
