NOTE: This thread is the result of a thread merger and has gone through restoration to get it to ASR standards.

I'm not for tube connectors, wires (some prefer to solder them on), speaker wires, or expensive crossover parts.

But I am for smooth response and especially a clean waterfall (spectral decay)...

SUMMARY ADDED BY STAFF...

Danny's Distortion Masterclass identifies 6 claimed types of distortion and promises to let you know how they sound. There are 2 parts to the video and he claims it is all free form. Given the 45 min length and his rambling style, it does seem unrehearsed. So, if you choose to listen, be prepared. His 6 distortion topics are:
  1. Harmonic distortion
  2. Time and Phase
  3. Surface Reflection
  4. Stored Energy
  5. Cabinet Resonance
  6. Room distortion
His surprise reveal is that the worst of these is Room distortion. You might expect to actually hear samples of these but instead get Danny describing how they sound. As the merged content contained the second video, it is later in the thread.

I watched it. Half the stuff he says are wrong. And of course quite biased toward his own business. He doesn't post distortion measurements so claims (incorrectly) that they are impossible to measure outside of anechoic chamber. He also makes wild claims that since music has harmonic structure, you can't tell speaker distortion for music! He says confusing things like improper crossover design being result of "phase distortion." Soundstage being impacted by phase. Waterfalls being important (they are not).

especially a clean waterfall (spectral decay) ....................
Watermark displays are redundant with frequency response. What they do show in time domain is highly dependent on parameters used. Check out Danny's waterfall display for his LGK speaker:

This is the reality:

With simple change of display properties, I can show something close to his:

So be very careful in looking at these measurements especially if the person presenting has a biased interest.

But the waterfalls sure are pretty! :)

Always important to be careful with videos like these since people like Danny are in this business, and therefore have their business in mind. Similarly to the Q&A videos on Paul's PS Audio YT channel, he's not going to say power conditioners are a waste of your money, because then he wouldn't sell power conditioners.

The best SOUNDING speakers I ever owned are designed by Danny! I haven’t thought of “upgrading” since I bought them. Best speaker buying decision I ever made!
That, and $7 will get us a cup of coffee.

You have anything of substance you can add regarding his distortion video? This is not a fan club thread.

I'm not saying your speakers sound good or bad but Danny has some shady methods and sells some shady stuff. That's why he gets slagged here @ ASR.

It is worth noting that unless at truly gross levels lower order harmonic distortion (H2 and H3, especially H2 - which to my understanding is pretty much inaudible until you start to hit about 10%) is largely inaudible. Higher order HD and IMD are much more readily audible, and these are really what make a speaker sound "distorted".

So as usual Danny is in the camp of "knows just enough to be dangerous".

The videos are both around 45 minutes, 90 minutes with this guy is way beyond what I can handle...

Okay boss, please continue your new GR bashes thread, I hear his business is doing fine lately so apparently not everyone thinks alike.

I don't understand why someone should be offended if you say that your seller/brand doesn't always say the right things and doesn't always make perfect products, if you like his speakers that's fine, you'll continue to like them but that doesn't make Danny an oracle.
My favorite speakers are klipsch rp280f, they are quite frowned upon on the site, I still like them and I'm not offended.

I’m not personally offended, just maybe I can help a person thinking of trying the brand to not get turned off by these threads found at ASR.

Perhaps just buy better loudspeakers in the first instance?

Erin started posting a burst decay that appears to be more useful where time is represented in wave periods rather than raw time. It seems to avoid the false "slow bass" showing that traditional CSDs have.

Made it until 2:57, while cheating a bit in skipping the first two minutes. He says: " Everything deviating from the input is distortion." How could he tell, the input is to arrive at the listeners eardrum? I mean, is it really so, but the room's reverberation and all?

The presentation is cute, so that for naive (sic!) watchers it may give opportunity of tingly peace of mind once the upgrade is ordered.
