I have the Noire X and they have bass, but virtually no bass punch/rumble/thump. Despite what the frequency response curves say, my HE1000 Stealth headphones have much better low end. Strange...
That sounds like a possible poor seal. Glasses? Thick hair? Closed headphones are more sensitive to seal than open headphones due to acoustic impedance, the net effect is leakage can reduce bass for closed headphones, similar to how many IEMs need a good seal to deliver bass.

The connection between membrane and wire is potentially something than can be somewhat problematic depending on the how the physical contact is made.

This is because the membrane is very thin and the 'coil' that is on it and needs to go over in a piece of wire using contact pressure.
With dynamic drivers the coil is made of wire and is just soldered to some lug.

Dynamic drivers also can break the thin wire has to cross from the moving part to the stationary part.
In planars the contact is made at a point where the membrane is fixed so does not have an issue.

In some DCA headphone models there also seems to be an issue with the used connectors inside which might be the case here.
There were two problems that could cause this, both are resolved, one in Aug and one last month. For this reason we're extending warranty for channel imbalance issues on these units in case some show the problem over longer periods of time, one was our issue, one was Molex parts suddenly not being reliable after 10+ years of use.

The driver motor had a literal complete redesign to ensure both issues are eliminated, we now use the same system for contacts we do on Stealth, which is super reliable.

That would have been a warranty repair/exchange, it is 100% out of spec and not acceptable. This is an issue we found and that has been resolved for new production, but there were some units in the field that will be affected.

As this was a reliability issue and was on us, as I've posted before, we are adding extended warranty for at least an extra year for imbalance on the A2 and NOIRE class headphones. For our international customers, the unit goes back to the distributor who will arrange return to us and/or replace the unit.

Sorry for that hassle!

Lastly, we don't "dump rejects" on anyone, that would be the literal definition of business suicide! Rejects get torn down or destroyed depending on the nature of the problem. B-stock are labelled as such and are strictly minor cosmetic issues.
I appreciate the reply(thanks) and want to believe you but how do i know for sure that if i buy another i'll get a unit that neither has or will have these design issues? Thomann got restocked in mid November and the unit i got was manufactured in early August(US date format 8/5/25) so i can reasonably assume if i order another it'll have the same risk of issues...
Are other models affected? Else perhaps i could order another model that for sure will not have the same issue.
The question remains, if you didn't send Thomann units because of disagreements(like it doesn't make things any easier for consumers in the EU but i suppose it's kinda understandable) where did they get units manufactured 12+ weeks prior? Even considering transportation time for plane/boat it doesn't make much sense.

We resolved the first issue in September production, the second was last month (it's far less common but it did need to be addressed). The second issue potentially affected other models (it was the Molex connector not holding as firmly as it should) but we have only seen two fail in the field, to my knowledge.

Inventory can take time to get through a channel, since it ships to distributors then to retailers then to you. I assume Thomann had stock they're working through but they buy through distribution not through us and of course I have no idea what their inventory situation is. I can't guarantee you wouldn't get another unit from Aug because what is in stock and where is out of our control, but it gets less likely every day. As I noted, should you have a problem, especially in Germany, we usually just replace it which unit gets sent back to us by the distributor at a later time.

The primary imbalance problem was specific to the A2/Noire driver and doesn't exist in our other models.

I have very short hair, and I do wear glasses, but I can't tell any difference with them on or off. Running a frequency sweep, I have nice, clear bass to below 30 Hertz, but when playing music, there just isn't any punch or thump as you should hear from bass drums, etc. The driver in my HiFiMan Stealth headphones is much larger than in the Noire X. Maybe that has something to do with it? I need the DCA Stealth, but that isn't in the budget!

I’ve seen it suggested that the HiFiMans are transferring much more energy to the skull, potentially via the ear pads. Similar concept to bone conduction headphones. Might explain some of the difference between measured FR and actual perception.

I am not sure, this is a bit of an ambiguous area. Some people like to talk about "slam" in headphones, but that to me is a complex subject. I have always believed "slam" really is the same region PA people call "kick," about 100-300Hz, which is where people tend to "feel" bass. There is zero research to back this up, that I know of, but the typical HiFiman doesn't follow the Harman bass profile, and instead measures "flat" like a ruler, which relative to Harman adds about 2dB of bass centered at 200Hz. You might try a +2dB PEQ at 200Hz, Q of about 1 which should cover 100-300Hz and see if that does what you expect. The flip is we should deliver much more deep bass if your seal is good. If that's not it, I am not sure I know what else to suggest.

Thanks, Dan. I just watched your "Measurements 101" presentation on YouTube from CanJam NYC in 2022. Your explanation on THD cleared some things up. I think harmonics in my HE1000 Stealth headphones is part of what I'm hearing - that and the fact that the HE1000 drivers are much larger that the ones in the Noire X. I need your Stealth headphones for their larger driver, but I'm a regular working person, and that kind of money is way out of budget. I'll listen more to my Noire X and try to get used to them. Thank you for all your input.

i just got these headphones recently but my dac's aren't powerful enough to drive them, i have a smsl m300 se as my dac what would be the best headphone amp that i coudl get for these headphones around ~$150, i also don't care if i have to buy them used

JDS Atom Amp 2 would be my first choice at that price point.

looks good but i want balanced in and balanced out, my headphones use 4.4mm in and my dac can output xlr 3 pin and 4.4mm but that goes threw it's internal amp

Check out the Topping A50s.

First things first I want to thank Dan for all the work he have done. I've bought Noire X couple of days ago. I like E3 a bit more but those are a bit too expensive for me at the moment, while Noire X being almost perfect. Very comfortable, very clean, I love the scene and details. But I love to listen to the music loud. Very loud. Obscenely loud one may say. And I'm not sure how loud can they go (I'm kinda scared to drive them too hard, I don't want to blow $1k headphones). Any info on how loud can they go without sustaining any damage? What would be max rated power or peak SPL I should stop at? Sound wise I find DCA headphones best suiting me (though I'd like a bit more bass and going up to skull cracking volume levels).

Any pleasure obtained by listening stupid loud is always short lived. You'll soon end up deaf, and where's the pleasure in that? Just imagine that the Noires are super delicate and back off.

Are the NOIRE X HP's a big upgrade from my HD660S2? I hear more detail on my KEF's speakers.
