Dan Clark ÆON CORE Headphone Review

I've concluded that I'd probably need to invest in something like a Smyth Realizer to experince what I most desire from headphones (and unfortunately I'm too cheap to expend that much cash to optimise my enjoyment of headphones). For the past few years, reviews of high-quality headphones like the DCA Aeon Core have intrigued me, but I always find myself thinking, "Am I really going to spend nearly $1,000 (or more) on an audio component I might rarely use?" Listening to music over loudspeakers for more than half a century (and much of that time with a multi-channel system) seems to have ruined my appreciation of headphones. But I have to admit that, like you, I'm sincerely tempted to buy one of the recent models produced by Dan Clark Audio because of the universally excellent reviews they've been getting.

I'd like to add a little note here & say I find his solution excellent for 7.1 virtual gaming in headphones, best solution I've found. You need a DAC that is 7.1 capable though whilst also being able to turn off any virtual surround processing the DAC may normally do so that you can let his solution stand alone. Yep, so essentially a DAC that exposes 7.1 channels to the operating system with the ability to toggle any surround processing off within the DAC's software so you can rely just on his surround processing system. SoundblasterX G6 DAC is one such DAC that exposes itself as a 7.1 DAC whilst also being able to turn off all Soundblaster Virtual Surround at the same time which is a requirement. But for his normal Stereo version then you don't need any special DAC, and indeed that gives you an out of head experience for normal 2 channel music listening, albeit not my preferred option for music listening, but doesn't mean it won't be yours.

Thanks! I'll look into this Virtual Surround software. My apologies for going a bit off-topic. The latest headphone models made by Dan Clark Audio have been "calling my name" (even though I keep finding reasons to postpone any actual headphone purchase...)

Had a quick skim through that article, I mean they seem to be a subjectivist site and so they have a pretty big section on how to pair it with different DAC/amps, albeit they do at least show the measurement of the headphone that Dan published.

Yeah, I have thought about the Smyth Realizer from time to time too... but I am afraid I would not use it much either, and it's too expensive for that.

How much is Smyth Realizer? Last time I looked it wasn't that much more than the more expensive Dan Clarkes? I should google it anew, but I'm inviting discussion, and besides the Smyth Realizer allows for more flexibility than just the promise of a new headphone, in fact it's supposed to take any good low distortion headphone and turn it into something that sounds like quality speakers along with the spacial cues / soundstage of good speakers in a room, but to get the best out of it you have to measure your "ears" with in ear mics in the best room you can find with the best speakers & the best in room setup, and then you measure again with in ear mics with your headphones on, and then it can do the adjustments to tailor everything to your HRTF and the "perfect room" that you've measured - so it's only as good as the effort and availability of good rooms & speakers that you have available to you to rent or buy (you could hire a studio I suppose), and this is true for surround systems too (which it can emulate) - put the effort in at the beginning and pay to rent studios that are proven to be setup "perfectly" and you can calibrate your Smyth Realizer & fairly modest but good headphone to emulate that really very accurately by most accounts. So it's not just about paying for the purchase of the equipment, but it's also about paying to make sure it's setup properly......but if you're willing to spend thousands then that might be worth the investment at which point you don't need your headphones you're using for this task to be expensive Dan Clarkes, and instead they just need to be low distortion headphones without any ridiculous sharp frequency anomalies. Thing is for me, Harman Tuned low distortion headphones are already very good for music listening so I'm not feeling the pull of the high dollar & high setup time investment of the Smyth Realizer.

This generally positive subjective review offers some fairly sharp criticism of the Aeon Core’s bass performance:

“While the lows have some clarity from the foundation of the bass tone, it never seems to hit very hard. Bass notes can have some vigor to them, but the timbre is always very neutral. On the right tracks where there’s a strong bass instrument, like an upright bass or an electric string bass, the lows emerge with depth and body. However, the response is still very soft…”

Is there anything in the measurements that supports this charge of fundamentally wimpy, somewhat anemic slam-less bass that fails to summon a vigorous, accurate low-end impact when the recording offers it?

I’m struggling to see this in the measurements, or indications that would account for “very soft” bass or an inability to provide bass slam when the music calls for it. I’d be surprised if the testing showed these flaws and Amir didn’t point them out.
 
Help me out here guys, I have the Noire X. I purchased it believing that the AMTS technology was some breakthrough tech that improved the upper frequency response, or improved standing waves, distortion levels etc. so I was happy to see something semi-affordable that would work for my office needs and it has been a fine headphone. However looking at the reviews of all of these Aeon based headphones (Aeon 2 Noire, Noire X, Core etc.) now seeing this review shows an improvement in distortion level over both the original Noire and Noire X, the reviews also show the Core as maybe having a more agreeable tuning with less peaks. What exactly then were the benefits of choosing the Noire X with AMTS? and what then would be the point of upgrading to the E3? (Outside of driver size) and perceptive soundstage and different tuning?

I guess I am just a little confused, some clarification would help.

Probably due to the evaluation of the measurement goodness often beginning and ending at the Harman target, despite said target being only one of the possible approaches to achieving a balanced, enjoyable frequency response tuning. Other responses can be and are enjoyed/preferred, even in Harman's own studies (like the 2018 paper).

To be clear, I haven't heard CORE, and I'm not saying everyone will feel this way—it's an individual judgment—but every one of Dan's headphones I have heard has had the issue of too much bass vs. too little low midrange, with the direct result being that they lack a sense of overtone richness for bass instruments, and yes, IMO this is responsible for the lack of punch/weight to percussive instruments that include or token bass frequencies. I also think this coloration being consistent in basically all of his headphones is why a good few people find his headphones "un-dynamic."

It's an issue I have with strict Harman-ish headphones broadly, like the Sennheiser HD 480 Pro I just reviewed, or really any headphone that has the bass shelf corner frequency around 100 Hz with the typical 2nd order Q value. Bass instruments' low fundamentals get a push, but their early overtones responsible for much of the "thud" or "meat" of instruments is, relative to the bass shelf, reduced/de-emphasized.

??? The fastest way to get "undynamic" is to have anemic bass because that is where most of the energy of music is. Of course, if by that you are using made up subjectivist term, then anything goes.
 
to those who think anaemic bass is preferable, no judgement, but I need to ask: what genres of music do you listen to?

i'm not as well-read as amirm and can't speak to the idea of "energy of music", but even as a layman it seems like common sense to me that certain styles of music are going to sound worse with less bass
 
I suspect the DCA's are only 'bass-light' when one has imperfect seal.
To me (personal) Harman bass levels are too 'fat' sounding unless one listens to older rock and pop recordings which can usually do with some low bass boost.
Well made recordings don't sound right to me.

Some people complain about 'soft' bass but maybe it is in the recording or in their head ... or real (lack of 100Hz emphasis) or they don't listen at the 'right' SPL.

Some people swear that the K501 has good 'tight' bass and this is caused by the lack of low bass emphasizing the bass harmonics.

I like low bass but I like (prefer) it slightly lower than what Harman came up with. Besides .... that is just an average most people seem to prefer and not a holy truth that shall not be deviated from.

It is amazing that Dan can actually make a headphone that follows a target so closely. This isn't easy to do.

I have owned 3, Aeon Closed X, Aeon Noire and Noire X. They all have low impact bass without a lot of presence, it just sounds like a very competent system with a small sub. I typically EQ in bass either from 200 Hz peaking filter or with a sub bass low shelf. Im not sure if it’s seal related, I can remove my glasses and press the headphones to my ears and there is no change. I like the headphones overall so it’s not a deal breaker, I use the Noire X every day, I crank it up loud on my Topping DX5ii which sits on my desk at work.

Start with increasing the 80-150Hz (or even up to 300Hz for some that like a chesty sound) region or lowering the region below 80Hz slightly.

Also there is no shame in preferring less or more bass than what Harman research found to be the most preferred level at a certain listening SPL.
The latter matters a lot.
I'm sure there are ton's of people that find the tonal balance of a headphone 'snaps' in correctly at a certain listening level which may or may not be at their preferred level.
Perception is a weird thing.

When one likes the sound (with or without EQ, tone control or DSP) then you like it. Bonus points when the comfort is 'right' too.

The search for a better headphone that does exactly what one wants is long and may well be endless.

I think it’s not only preference based on these measurements that play into, but also individual HRTF and pinna gain. Im not an engineer so I don’t fully understand that stuff, but if I set my LCD-X, my Arya Stealth, HD-650, Aune AR5000, Noire X and various Aipods to use Oratory 1990 Harman EQ etc. they all sound very different, and with substantial differences in bass quantity at any volume.

The generated EQ is basically only valid for the fixture and target of that measurement in a certain position (or averaged position) at a certain SPL range to some highly averaged response which differs from the actually required compensation.
Your head/ears/brain/listening level is likely to deviate from the EQ applied to your copy on your head.
A different seal, target, test fixture can lead to massively different EQ and different sound.

Headphone measurements (regardless how expensive the test fixture is) is only a kind-of exact science and only to the used standard at that within the limitations of the standard/fixture.
All that can be done is make a choice for certain measurement fixtures and select a target and stick to it so at least the measurements are made acc. to a standard and comparable to each other because they are all measured in the same way (assuming positioning and seal is consistent).

IMO it is completely fine to have opinions on the sound and then give explanations for that based on the frequency response—especially when those conclusions are the result of blind testing comparing the two (which mine is). But even when not doing this, I think people should be allowed to have opinions, especially when they back up those opinions with clear explanation of what part of the sound disagrees with them.

I would appreciate it if you didn’t try to oversimplify and handwave away what I think is a fairly uncontroversial—if yes, individual—judgement on the sound quality as I receive it. I’m not saying it needs to have no bass, or much less bass to sound good to everyone, I’m just saying there are reasons that a relatively steep SPL change between bass and low midrange can have an effect that, for some (surely not all), will produce a less than satisfactory result re: bass reproduction or what many incorrectly call “dynamics” or “slam.” Personally I think a slight reduction of SPL under 100 Hz and a bit more around 200 Hz would do them some good, and potentially help the complaints Dan has gotten about his designs lacking punch/slam (even if they’re subjective terms, he’s selling these products to people having subjective experiences, so its justifiable to want to make them enjoy the products more if he can).

Dan himself has made similar claims but about a slightly different coloration (adding more mid-bass around 150 Hz on top of the Harman target) being responsible for “slam,” and… well for one I don’t think he would’ve received the same reaction for doing so because he’s Dan and he seems to get quite a lot of love here (reasonably so). But this “case study” of his was done because he was interested to know why kept getting the feedback from people that his headphones weren’t satisfying in the bass, and I don’t actually think his findings reflected what most peoples issue with the headphones were/are.

In my experience people who find “anemic” bass preferable are those who simply prefer their music presented differently, rather than having a library that would make such a preference obvious (though in some cases surely people prefer less bass due to, for example, enjoying a lot of music with a warmer-on-average spectral tilt, like Orchestral music).

To me (personal) Harman bass levels are too 'fat' sounding unless one listens to older rock and pop recordings which can usually do with some low bass boost.
