Dali Spektor 1 Review (Bookshelf Speaker)

I'm wondering if the tweeter/HF characteristics of both the Spektor 1 and 2 might make them a good choice for basic A/V 2.0 or 2.1 application (i.e. movies and TV), in that perhaps they'd make dialogue as clear as possible. Anyone found this to be the case?

I really enjoyed the Spektor 2s but I didn't find them very detailed. Their biggest issue for your application is the 'phantom centre' isn't very cohesive. Vocals in the middle of the stereo field sounded a bit muddled.

I upgraded to the Oberon 1s and found them to be far more resolving with a clearer centre image.
 
Thanks. Lack of a central image might be a concern, but maybe less so off-axis (a group watching a movie), but I still wonder about overall clarity of dialogue which has become more and more of a problem over the years, directors (monitoring through 'phones) allowing actors to be 'naturalistic' (going all 'sotto voce', whispering, muttering), generally forgetting that they need to be picked up by the mic and actually be audible. I know I'm not the only one driven nuts by this.
 
You can use toe in crossed in front of listening position, with further spacing, to help present a more centre image for group listeners.

It won't help with absolute clarity though for the main listening position; speakers with even response, fix any problems with bass/boxy resonance and excess reflections can help.
 
After reading a lot of measurements and user impressions about the Spektor 1, I think it’s important to clearly separate their performance for music from their performance for TV and movies. It’s true that, from an audiophile perspective, they have some weaknesses: the frequency response isn’t the cleanest, there are cabinet resonances around 1–2 kHz, and the tweeter has a bit of extra brightness that can get fatiguing with critical music listening. On top of that, the small cabinet simply doesn’t produce much bass. For serious music listening, there are better options, no doubt.

But for TV, movies, and youtube content, they actually work far better than the graphs might suggest. In fact, the very characteristics that can be drawbacks for music become advantages for home entertainment. That brightness in the treble makes dialogue extremely clear, even at low volumes, and sound effects have a bit more air and detail, which fits perfectly with films and general TV content. It’s not the warm, audiophile type of tuning—but for TV it’s exactly what you want.

And once you pair them with a subwoofer, the game changes completely. Their biggest weakness—lack of deep bass and limited woofer excursion—simply disappears. Let the sub handle everything below about 80–90 Hz and the Spektor 1 suddenly sound much cleaner, more balanced, and surprisingly dynamic for their size. They can even play pretty loud without complaining. With a properly integrated sub, the overall presentation becomes fuller and much more cinematic than you’d expect from such tiny speakers.

So, if someone is considering them for a dedicated HiFi music setup, they’re probably not the ideal choice. But if the main use is TV, movies, series, news, or youtube—and especially if you’re running a subwoofer—they’re far better than you might think from looking at measurements alone. For this kind of content, they actually perform extremely well and get the job done without any fuss.

After owning a few dali speakers for home theater I find the brightness often shows up as sibilance in voices that gets annoying real quick, its bad at lower volumes and turns into unbearable once you start turning the volume up. It also can make voices sound tinny and flat as opposed to clear.

I didnt realise what bright was until I started listening to dalis lol.

I still have the DALIs as my surrounds and I hate-like them.

Their measured response is almost absurd. They need elaborate EQ to be usable, especially if you want to incorporate them in an existing system.
See the gray response curve, which is the raw response of my two Dalis.

The red curve is how I matched them to my fronts. Huge, huge difference.
