DAC listening test files - updated with new filters files

What ADC did you use?
As I have already said, I am not disclosing the method and the hardware used, unless we have some test results. I think you might be surprised. I am aiming at the usual suspect against ABX test with digital files. I can only make you sure that the files are not identical and that DAC and ADC are used in the test.
The tests have to be done with black boxes and not with the disclosed devices.

Good idea. Unfortunately I can't here a significant difference between the two files even with headphones. So the question whether good external DACs sound different is not mine anymore. Maybe in my youth I heard it but at that time no consumer DACs availlable. For me internal DACs started with the CD players. And also there the difference between good ones were very small.
If you look at these in DeltaWave, the PK metric comparing @pma 's files is about -62dB. So that is possibly audible. Certainly difficult for me to find a difference, though. In his update, Josh reports PK metric of better than -100dB (and again, too bad he won't give up the files!). If we can't hear a difference between PMA's recordings, it is hard to believe that differences Josh heard were in fact differences in the DACs where they match 100X better.

edit: I hope the new recordings are different only because of different DACs. I guess we are on standby to hear for sure that's all that was changed. I guess I will go ahead with an ABX, even though it will basically just be guessing.

edit: 10/16 correct. I tried to convince myself that one just sounded clearer than the other. But really I think it was just guessing and I was mildly lucky. I could have used better equipment. Maybe I will try again with a better dac and headphone amp.

That’s a good post, @pjug . We shall discuss the whole method and setup after collecting results. However, we know nothing about Josh’s files. We only have a story, no data. Data is crucial.

Very good. If you get 10/16 three times, then you have statistically valid positive result (I need to check). But it must not be a cherry-picking, like neglecting all the bad results and showing only the good ones. The testing may be done per partes. You sum up all the positive results vs total number of trials.

The P value on my report is 22%. Does that mean by guessing I would expect to do as well 22 out of 100 trials? If so I would say much more likely than not I was just lucky.

On the better than -100dB PK Value from Josh, I got that from the table in his update. I hope I am understanding that correctly. I did npot think it was possible to get such a good match without clock being in sync, and he used Cosmos so it would not have been synced. Am I wrong thinking better than -100dB is suspect without synchronization?

edit:
You said if I get the sam 3X in a row then we have confidence that it was not in fact guessing. Do you want me to do it again? I think I shoulkd do it with better equipment if I am going to do it multiple more times.

10/16 is still possible only by chance, easily. p<0.05 (5%) is requested at least, based on probability theory and statistics.

You may try to find a p-value calculator on web, I am sorry but I do not have that much time to search for and explain everything. There has been enough job with the files to prepare them properly. It is not just like only to connect and record to get meaningful files.

12/16 makes p = 0.038
31/48 makes p = 0.0297
10/16 + 10/16 + 11/16 makes a valid positive result.

I know it is tiring and boring, but believe me, 10/16 you may get when just randomly clicking at X=A, X=B. I am saying it based on my own experience with dozens, maybe hundreds of ABX tests. It is not to belittle your result, but just a fact.

In his update, Josh reports PK metric of better than -100dB (and again, too bad he won't give up the files!).
But only for the unattended path through the comparator. For the attenuated comparison of one DAC to itself, it's around - 70 dB (median) / - 58 dB (max). So much, much worse and also surprisingly bad. For some reason he did not report the PKmetric RMS value and I think it was also discussed that he measured the comparator incorrectly using the high voltage 2.5 mm input on the Cosmos, but that was all a bit unclear to me.

In essence, we don't know what the actual PKmetric ended up being for the tests Josh did.

DeltaWave allows for clock synchronization by adjusting for constant clock drift and by removing the initial delay offset with accuracy of a tiny fraction of a sample.

Yes, I get that. I just thought that the drift compensation can never be as good as having synchronization. Have you seen -100dB matching without synchronization?

Edit: I just re-read Josh's update. The -100dB PK Metric was the same DAC run through the the A and B comparator channels. So my point that this is 100X better than the new files matching with -62dB PK Metric isn't relevant. I don't know that he ever recorded the outputs of more than one of the DAC.

These numbers are unimportant regarding audibility (-100dB pkmetric). Similarly as THD+N.

PKMetric as a single number is an RMS (average) over the whole recording, so there could be much larger components to it than -100dB - a graph of PKMetric is a better way to look at it. In fact, -100dB PKM speaks pretty poorly of the A/B channel matching in the ABX box.

Leaving out the comparator, what would you expect for PK Metric for two consecutive recordings, same track, the same DAC and same ADC. But not with sychronized DAC and ADC, just having timing and clock drift corrected by DeltaWave? And I should apologize for asking you instead of just trying it myself!

Depends.

To make it clear about the test files that I linked in post #1, they are level matched and the clock drift is corrected in DW. The clock drift correction was necessary to get reasonable result when the files are analyzed by our members. On the other hand, there was no correction of amplitude/phase response and no correction of nonlinear distortion. Just to put one number, THD/1kHz/-1dBFS is -130.8 dB and THD+N/1kHz is -118.5 dB. Still, these numbers are pointless. And a note - the files are NOT two consecutive recordings from one and same DAC. There is a BIG HW difference.

Understood. I was just trying to get at what the limit is for null tests of recordings made without synchronization. Just to get an idea when comparing DACs if how far away we are from what is achievable with the setup.

I did 2/16 with speakers  .
To the point I enjoyed my spectacular fail .
If only it was music I can enjoy, once at an ABX!

On a serious note, I know nothing about the work or artists.
But unless some (even deliberate) very bad (by artist's side) recording is going on, the DACs (or whatever pma used) sound REALLY poor, reminds me of Low's b-sides (but those are actually fun)

Two consecutive recordings with the same circuit and a consistent clock drift between DAC and ADC should produce PKMetric in the -120 to -130dB range assuming the noise level isn't high and doesn't fall in the more "sensitive" frequencies where it would affect the result more.

I did not even dare to compete in ABX; my brain stops all analysis when confronted with this music choice; swapped some twenty times between the files for seconds, but no difference audible for me.
Maybe tomorrow after a long sleep it will be better.
BTW: 2/16 is far beyond statistical noise: are you not concerned you simply did A for B ?
