DAC audible differences are finally proven with ABX?

Uh huh. Did that and I get (I added the note in brackets):

Code:
Probability of success

Probability [ i.e. p= ]
0.0009766
Chance of success
0.0977 %
Probability of 1 in
1,024

Note the percent sign in the 'chance of success' number.

The danadam table is confusing because its number, too, must be a percent. I see that now.

0.0977% = 0.0977/100 = 0.000977 ~ 0.0009766 ~ 0.001

Better to present probabilities as p than percent , to my mind.

p=0.001 falls within the standard 'statistical significance' threshold of p<=0.05. 'Expected' to happen by chance once in 1024 trials of 10

fwiw, the significance level is set in percent and its label says "... [%]" and the table header says "P... × 100%".

They (at AS) have “discovered” that a sine wave that is suddenly started at t = 0 has infinite bandwidth. And they speculate they need rise time Tr ==> 0 to transfer it. They should rather investigate how the transient is created in a real musical instrument, what is the real shape of such transient and how it translates to SPL created. It is unbeliavable what kind of pseudotheories are the audiophiles able to create.

Trying to get some info what is going on with that Van Alstine abx box. Does Amir already have it? Will it be tested? Or has it just faded out after initial peak of interest? Like many times?

Thank you!!! I updated my initial message since your last contribution made mine down to zero! Some of that will go into more reviews :p
Second good news is that the box arrived at destination, Amir told me ;)

Amir's big reveal will determine whether I call off my painstaking search, unsuccessful thus far, for a wife who has keener hearing than Josh, or whether I should press on with the search.

Those statistical success tables that were posted earlier might come in useful in my search! I guess I should be checking the probability of one success instead of perfect score or zero score. Or maybe two successes, just to have a backup candidate in case the first success does not work out. I hasten to add that by "wife" I do not refer to poaching someone else's existing wife.

Box is here but I am overwhelmed with a ton of gear that was sent before I went to China, and a bunch more after my conversations with the companies there! I can do quick measurements of the ABX but I worry that I have to keep it on the bench for quite a while to answer questions about this and that setting.

Regard the 'box' as an item of high interest to select members and give it an appropriate 'seeding' in the queue.

Don't let it spend so much time on the test bench as to cause the queue to become constipated.;)

Consider measuring a Denon AVR-X3900H before the ABX box.

There’s always the risk that if you find a measurable “tell”, people will claim the box was damaged in transit

More than that, it's the first step to dealing with what can only be described as a result (Josh's) that would undermine established science. I agree that it would be nice if it were prioritized.

If we are going to go there, then we can start to doubt the authenticity of Josh's reporting. :)

Measuring the box may confirm or disprove one of the many variables in the Josh’s uncontrolled test.

Some people might. But they're the people who wouldn't be convinced by any evidence, so just ignore them.

I can't say how much I'm looking forward to seeing those results. Whatever they are, good or bad, we all want to know, don't we?

Far from undermining science, I think this might be one of the great opportunities to actually advance audio science.

I think PMA's positive result from an ADC test really opens some doors as well.

It’s a guy from ‘computer audiophile’, where ‘everything matters’ I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

Bump ;-)

Firstly, I truly appreciate all the effort Amir puts into ASR, but IMO this has been the most interesting topic here in quite some time, and it appears to have been put on the backburner to review niche live-event audio products and car stereo amplifiers instead?

Maybe Erin can find the time to measure his unit after all so the performance of the box isn't a lingering mystery for much longer. It would also be a good data point to compare to Amir's results when/if he gets around to testing his unit.

Just very curious to see how this all plays out lol.

Folks, @amirm runs this site for free. I'm sure he appreciates the donations from many forum members, but it's free to join, free to participate, free to have gear tested if you want to send it in, and free to sell in the marketplace if you want to do that. It's all free and he doesn't work for us.

So have a little patience.

Not to mention, many of you know him better than I do, and even as someone who only knows him a little bit through this forum, I would say the odds are very good that "this will have to wait" doesn't mean it will be on the back burner as long as some of you seem to think it will.

This might be one of our most interesting topics, but it's a lively forum with many, many participants and many, many more readers and that's not going to change anytime soon.

In the meantime, I wish a very happy Labor Day to everyone in the US.

Yes, but please take into account that it was a turmoil debate and persuading for the unit to be sent for testing, which finally resulted in some members sending a lot of money to buy and send the unit to Amir, that the initiated action was not “for free” at all and might have had a kind of priority, then.
