Hi. I use the laptop connected to a wall socket and both the dac and the headphone amp are connected to wall sockets. Nevertheless, my impression is that the dac drains the battery of my pc. Any day, it lasts less. What could I do? Can a powerbank solve the problem?

Thanks and best,

davide

Get a USB Power Meter like this:

It'll take the guesswork out of the equation and help you find an actual solution.

Thanks. Another move could be to connect a sort of hub an external cd burner and the dac, since the audio card of the laptop is bypassed. But it is fancy.

I saw a lot of usb power meter like you posted but they misure the power of a battery charger. My dac is connected to pc and this to the electrical network of my house. Can I test the pc?

If your laptop is connected to power then your dac is not draining your laptop battery. Your laptop PSU is charging the battery (if needed) and powering the laptop whenever it is connected.

If
Any day, it lasts less

Then most likely your laptop battery is reaching end of life. Can you get a replacement?

If you connect them like this:
Laptop->Power Meter->DAC
then the meter will display the amount of power that's flowing between DAC and laptop.

Ok. I understood. To @tonycollinet: this pc has only two years and I cannot change its battery since it is fixed inside the pc. I cannot remove it as usually. It is something flat and 20x30 cm large.

Depending on quality of the original battery, and how much it has been used (charge/discharge cycles), 2 years might be it's natural life.

Most laptops from reputable suppliers can have a battery service (replacment) possibility. If it is from an unknown brand that might be more problematic. Does your laptop have any battery dianostic information available. You can easily check the battery status for Mac laptops for example. This is what my battery status says.

However, since it started with about 10 hour battery life, the 2 or 3 hours I still get are adequate for my purposes, so I'll sevice it when it drops below 2 hours.

Well. Lenovo has a dedicated software, but experts of Microsoft suggested me to no install such software, since Windows is able to install what it needs. Lenovo Vantage detect the status of the battery. In another pc I have such software.

Are you windows user? I don't think you need to install anything, you can get a very detailed battery report (cycles, capacity left etc etc) any time:

Planet Earth is full of “experts of Microsoft”, how many of them really work for Microsoft? Windows instalsl what is needed for it to work as a operative system, but doesn’t know anything about software updates that are related to the hardware of the computer we are using. If I have issues with my business computer the IT department doesn’t even create a ticket if I don’t have all the approved updates installed.

After saying that, it is possible there there is some applications in your laptop that is draining your battery, there are tools to monitor applications and battery usage. Look for example to this Lenovo support page

Thanks. I would attach the battery report, but I cannot since it is a html.

The 90% of the battery is drained by Edge. The second app drains only the 3%.

I managed two PC repair shops and worked on a couple of Lenovo laptops. The battery management software will cause fits during some Windows updates. It's always after an update and there's usually a lag time of a month or two before you can update the battery management app (or longer). I'd get rid of it and let Windows handle battery monitoring. Windows is already overboard with power management on every little thing. The last one I did was right after an auto update to a new build and all of the sudden he said it couldn't stay charged long, or even left overnight turned off, couldn't fully charge. I went to add/remove software and got rid of the battery minder app and it was normal. Another time I went searching, and there was an update for it that fixed it. It's like a ticking time bomb before another update throws that app off again, so I'd bail on it.

Running on the AC charger will not drain the battery. However, running your laptop on the charger constantly will cause the battery to age prematurely. Your L490 is a low-end business-class Lenovo device. The battery is replaceable, but to replace it you need to remove the bottom case of the device. If you wish to replace the battery yourself you should look through the replacement procedure in the Lenovo L490 Service Manual. You should also have on hand the proper tools to remove the bottom case.

Once the bottom case is removed, the battery can then be disconnected from the logic board and the battery retaining screws removed. The battery can then be removed from the device. Be aware that the battery connector on the logic board is very fragile and can be easily damaged or the wires for the battery can be damaged if done incorrectly. Work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the logic board or the battery.

Newer Lenovo devices don't have the old Lenovo Power Manager installed that displayed the battery status in the taskbar. Battery Bar Pro is a good replacement that provides many of the features of the old Lenovo Power Manager. Nirsoft's BatteryInfoView is another good utility that will allow you to monitor the long-term health of the battery.

I am sorry, but I own a Lenovo thinkpad L15 gen 1. I don't own a L490. If I made a typo, please excuse me.
