Good afternoon,

I'm a newbie in the audiophile world and would appreciate some advice from pros.
Since I'm a dev, I'm spending a lot of time in front of my PC.
I love blues, rock, jazz, metal and classical music. My current budget is 400 EUR for open back cans + DAC/AMP.
If you could recommend a good setup for this amount, that would be awesome.
I'm liking the build quality and sound of dt 990 pro but would be fine if you can recommend a better pair of open back headphones.

Thanks!

What do you have available in terms of onboard audio? Is the front headphone output clean?

I'd be thinking HD600 (or HD6XX) more than DT990 for your choice of music... you could use something fairly neutral, with decent enough but not necessarily spectacular bass performance. The DT990 has these sort of scooped-out mids that make it sound impressive on movies. Still good cans, mind you, and should take EQ well if need be, though this would probably cost you a good bit of level... just something to be aware of. AKG K712Pro would be another option.

The availability of budget headphone amps here in EU territory is a bit limited. Topping L30 (I can find one for 140€), or a trusty O2 from Head'n'HiFi (119€), I think that's about it. I'd rather be using one of those with an onboard Realtek than most any combo DAC/HPA you'll find around this price point.

Thanks,

Hm, from the reviews HD 600 are legendary headphones.
I already have Sennheiser BT 450, but these probably can't even compare with HD 600.
I do have motherboard onboard audio only and using Logitech z906 speakers.
I can get these 2 amps you mentioned and probably any Fiio amp.
Now, HD 600 are twice the price of dt 990 pro. About 318 EUR. Are they really worth that much?
I can increase my budget to 450-500 EUR, but since I'm a newbie, kinda don't want to overpay for my first setup.
