My setup consists of Cyrus One Cast integrated amplifier and Monitor Audio Silver 100 bookshelf speakers.
I recently wanted to play around with external amplification and bought the Crown XLS 1502. I've connected the pre-outs from the Cyrus to the Crown, set the gain on the Crown to 5 (out of 10) and started playing.
I of course wanted to play around with high volume listening levels (90+db at listening position), so the Cyrus had to be set to around 70% volume, but who cares, it's not powering the speakers. But the Cyrus started going into heat protection after a few mins of listening, and it happened 3 separate times already. What gives? Why is the Cyrus getting overstressed while working only as preamp (no speakers connected)?
It seems to work fine if the volume levels are kept below ~50%. I can compansate with gain settings on Crown and set them to 10, but that seems like a worse solution (more noise, more risk of accidental over volume).
