Cymax Purifi 1ET9040BA with Weiss OP2-BP Dual-Mono Power Amplifier

Please make sure they provide measurements for your amp like THD+N (and not just THD) at 1W (preferably 5W as is common here), SINAD, Distortion vs Power curve into 8/4/2 ohms.
I am not going to get too caught up in measurements. Measurement are good to a point and then there is point where measurements become pointless. Measurements become like a dick measuring contest. My ***** is 1mm longer than your *****...oh ok, I will make sure to tell your wife lol

I was looking for a Hypex NCx500 or Purifi 1ET9040BA build. I could have ordered a basic case, basic build for the same price. I wanted more of a premium build without breaking the bank. I have looked at all the usual suspects. They ranged from about the same price as the Cymax for a basic build all the way up to about double the price of the Cymax for more or less the same thing. I am not going into this thinking the Cymax sound or whatever is going to blow all the other Purifi variants away. I am getting a Purifi build which looks well done. Soundwise I may or may not even be able to tell a Cymax build from any other Purifi builds. The Cymax doesnt look cheap, looks well built and really thats all I am after. I dont care if it doesnt measure the best because I probably couldnt tell the difference anyways, they will all have the Purifi house sound.

You could spend a lifetime reading, studying, and worrying about measurements or just put away the measuring tape and enjoy the music. I am sure I am going to be completely happy with the Cymax, to me it looks great. All the other stuff is just a distraction, I am too old for that shyte. I just want to enjoy the music.

Does anyone have real photos of the Cymax Pro amplifier body in silver? I want to make an order exactly like this but on their website it's quite light..

Its funny, I was going to ask the same question. Almost everything I have is black, but I thought about getting a silver 9040 to match my Classe CP800 pre. I was thinking maybe even silver with black top. Then I figured just play it safe so I got black.

I'm also looking for a pair for my NAD M66 and I think the Cymax 1ET9040BA will be good with it.. I just can't decide which one to take because NAD has a combined color..

I think if you choose the Cymax in black, your NAD will look more prominent, especially since its design is classy and the display will also take a more commanding presence. If you choose the Cymax in silver, it has a large area of silverness which may give it a more prominent tint of emphasis to compete with the NAD. I don’t know if one might perceive that as balance or not. It’s quite hard to decide as you said too, so I guess it’s down to a matter of personal taste!

Louis from Cymax said my amp will ship today. He sent me some pics, I think it looks beautiful.

The gain selection is 21.4 and 28.4, also I think my preamp has some kind of gain settings if I am not mistaken...but I might be thinking of some Simaudio Moon stuff I had. Cymax customer service is excellent, any time I wanted to know something they got back to me right away or within hours. The lead time on my build was about 5 working days, which I think is excellent. I just couldnt see buying a premium build and having to wait months, thats stupid. I am so happy with how it looks and the build. I dont believe there is anything I would have done or ordered different. I most likely would have been totally happy with the pro build, but this looks darn good too. I cant wait to get it...every time I look at the pictures it makes me smile lol

Re post #171: you might have discerned I was not entirely happy with the finished result. However I copied #171 to Cymax and they responded promptly offering to send me a new (current I believe) partition for me to install. They thought it was not worth sending the amp back to them at this stage, with attendant shipping fees. I'm ok with that.
The explanation was that the Linear PSU was moved from the L side to the centre (Hypex PSU either side) hence the wiring looking positionally inappropriate. I believe the partition should have been matched to the Hypex PSU to Purifi module wiring.
However vipersg (I think) said that is now standard, so all good.

Hope you get your revised partition soon. Should be a straightforward swap with a few screws.

Yup new orders are standard now with the revised partition from what I understand from them.

The result of using the Cymax dual mono amp is so good that I’m now considering a 8-channel Purifi 6525 to replace my Onkyo PA-MC5501 in the near future.

I asked Louis about the Cymax preamp. I have a great preamp, but you never know, I would definitely consider one.

"We are coming out with a full digital preamp with digital/analog In/Out, digital volume control and Roon bridge capability by the end of the year."

I got my Cymax Purifi 1ET9040 yesterday. The local arm of the shipping company took a couple extra days to get the amp to me. Still it was about 12 days from ordering to in my hands, which I think is excellent. Wow, the amp really is a premium build. I wanted to weigh it, but I was so anxious to get it in my stand I forgot. The amp is quite substantial (just a guess of around 35 lbs) but is still manageable. I hooked it up with XLRs and the 12 volt trigger cable. The lighted switch glows red in standby and blue while on, which is the same as my preamp. I turned the light off, nice to be able to. I put the gain on high and that seems around the same as my old monos.

The amp triggered up and everything works as it should. Its dead quiet, I put my ear up to my speakers while on mute and I couldnt hear anything. It runs nice and cool too. I listened to music for a few hours yesterday and switched over to HT use. I ended up falling asleep on the couch, but anyways after all that the amp was maybe barely warm. I have since sold my awesome monoblocks, so I cant really give an A/B comparison. So far the Cymax Purifi seems as powerfull for the volumes I am using it at. I am in an apartment, so maybe then the Classe CA-M600 might have more balls. I dont think I am missing any details or anything. The soundstage is as wide and deep...maybe even more so???? (probably in my head lol), but point being it isnt lacking. Sitting here listening to tunes, its only getting better...dam it sounds good.

The Cymax is honestly an excellent premium type build. I am glad I bought a Purifi 9040 amp build. I am going to keep this amp for a long time so why not get everything I could possibly ever need. I could have got cheaper Hypex builds either stereo or monos in Canada and elsewhere, but they werent as nice as the Cymax. I looked at all the Purifi premium builds and basic builds. I dont want to mention names but I could have got a Purifi basic build and basic case for around the same price. When I looked at the more premium Purifi builds there was one build which would have been say a few hundred more. Well it isnt as nice as the Cymax. Ya these builds ranged from a few hundred more all the ways up to near double the price of the Cymax. The Cymax is probably the best build (the double the price one was close), the Cymax definitely is the best value.

The Cymax Purifi 9040 is an excellent build, I am so glad I bought it. The Purifi 1ET9040 is a really great module. I dont find it lacking in anyway, it sure sounds good. I think most people wouldnt be able to tell the 9040 is Class D. I even bet alot of die hard class AB or class A guys would be impressed. I got my Cymax with the Sparkos SS2590 op amps and while I am happy I may try the Weiss OP2-BP op amps some day.

So if anyone is on the fence I would whole heartedly recommend A Cymax Purifi 9040. They are a really great company to deal with. They were always responsive to my questions. My Cymax Purifi 9040 was a custom build (which I love), but Cymax was able to accommodate me with the custom build. The build of my amp and shipping was super fast. The thing is too, if you ever did have a problem, these amps are so modular, you could most likely diagnose it yourself. So you wouldnt necessarily have to ship the whole amp back. I am so happy with my Cymax 9040, I would definitely consider another amp, preamp, or other products from Cymax. Disclaimer: this was not a paid advertisement lol. I am just a regular guy who enjoys good audio products and I know the value of a buck. If I find a product that is good and has good value, I want to share my experience and help someone else out.

Fantastic! I think it’s like at least 40lb. I was hoping you weighed your amp because like you, I was too eager to get it hooked up haha. Agree, my first reaction was it’s so smooth it’s not possible to tell it’s a Class D, and I have been living with Class AB for more than 20 + years. Have fun with the run in, and let’s see your feedback after 100 hrs. Cheers!

Hey I wanted to thankyou again for bringing this amp to everyones attention. My build definitely benefited from the incremental improvements from user feedback and suggestions., so I thank all for that. I really like that I was able to customize my build, I really dont think I could ask for much more.

Ya I even bought a new battery for my bathroom scale that had been dead for a couple years lol. I shuffled things around in my stand a little bit. I had all wiring in place, I just needed a my Cymax amp. So when I got the amp, I was focused solely on install. I may weigh it yet, its not that hard to take out. I just went by the specs the Cymax weighs 14kg or about 31lbs. Mine has the 410mm chasis instead of 368mm chasis and with the full copper shields/divider I figured another 3 or 4 lbs, but maybe you are right at 40lbs. Its got some heft (thankfully not my 89lb mono amp heft), but still quite manageable. Its nice when you can plug cables into a component and it isnt moving because it is so light.

In some ways I wish I had kept my Classe CA-M600 monos to compare. It wasnt that I was unhappy with the CA-M600 in the least, I loved them. I just moved alot of my gear lately that I wasnt using or was kind of unnecessay or overkil. My Classe amps were great, but could I live without such beasts. The differences between the Classe and the Cymax would be subtle at best under my useage. Maybe under extreme volume use or some crazy hard to drive speakers there might be a more noticable difference. Another thing too I thought well maybe nobody will want to buy my Classe monos. Maybe I will just have to keep my monos, oh know poor me lol. Well it didnt take long to sell my monos. The guy that bought them is driving some huge monster hard to drive speakers, well the Classe monos dont break a sweat.

I really like the Cymax 9040. Like you are saying it is so smooth. I think we both mean smooth in the way its not a smoothed over the details smooth. Its smooth at least for me as in an effortless, no glare, natural kinda smooth without missing any details. I find voices to sound good and instruments like piano sound right. I have been listening to alot of music. there was something I was listening to (cant remember what it was now) but what struck me at the time is there is a certain warmth to that, it sounds correct or lifelike. The Purifi 9040 isnt your dads old class D or the one you heard 20 or 25 years ago. Listening to some music right now there some vocal piano playing, the piano had the lifelike natural weight to it...it sounded like a piano and not some kind of digital piano. I just wanted to add, I also said the Cymax was maybe warm to the touch after about 20 hrs. After 2 days it isnt any warmer...its barely warm to the touch.

I know some are probably saying sure hes raving about his new toy, wait until the honeymoon is over. I have had a couple other class D and AB amps. My Classe CA-M600 are excellent amps period and they came with a fairly large price tag, although you can spend a small fortune on amps. Sorry, I am listening to music now...I thought wow thats sounds good, so CLEAN. Anyways I still think the Classe monos are an excelent amp in build and looks for people that know the value of a dollar. Getting back to the Cymax, the Purifi 9040 is a wonderful module, but the Cymax Purifi 9040 is a really nice solid quality build. I am so happy I bought the Cymax. One more thing I wanted to say. Here I am raving about the Cymax 9040, I paid in CAD dollars (ouch) lol. If you are American, that means I paid about 50% more than you...which make the Cymax an even bigger value for you. I cant say enough good things about the Cymax, its the real deal. If you are thinking about buying one, dont worry just buy it. Sure you can get cheaper, but by like a $100 or not even, but the Cymax build is so much better. The bare bare bones Cymax probably is the cheapest, I did add a few things and I am glad I did. I better quit before I get the nickname fanboy.

Yes smooth as in delivering detail, airiness, clarity without sounding harsh. Its ability to control the speaker across the frequency range is so good, it delivers great separation and layering in the soundstage, and complex material is delivered effortlessly across low to high frequencies. I know some people are of the view that all class D amplifiers sound the same, that is not from what I have heard. It gives more expensive amps a run for their money too, which was why the shop owner selling Burmester and D’agostino commented that the Cymax 9040/Weiss is good and he didn’t expect that it was class D as it was not the stereotypical forward sounding clinical class D amp. Glad you love it!

I bought some Weiss opamps, a guy had some for sale locally at a good price so I snapped them up. I wanted to remain neutral on what effect the Weiss might do, so I went into it thinking the Weiss probably wouldnt do much. I kept my expectations low. The Weiss OP2-BP are definitely different than the Sparkos SS2590. Now if you ordered a Cymax with the Sparkos its something you could easily live with, I could have. I was curious...so my first impressions I thought maybe the Weiss werent as extended in the highs. With further listening the Weiss are, just maybe smother. The soundstage depth is definitely greater with the Weiss and taller too. I thought the soundstage width was about the same, but its just a touch wider too. Another thing the decay is increased. So in general now I would say the Weiss are airer, with increased soundstage in all directions, with depth being probably being the most noticeable. Listening to more music the Weisss are a little more detailed.

Now its not to say the Sparkos are bad or the Weiss are way better. Like I was saying I easily could have lived with the Sparkos, they sounded great. Its just when you hear both, there definitely are differences. The Sparkos do have a little warmer presentation and that sounds contrary to my first impressions where I thought the Sparkos might be a little more extended (weird). I think its going to come down to a preference. I would have to say I prefer the Weiss. I have always loved a deep soundstage so the Weiss tick that box. The Weiss are airier and more detailed, so thats a couple more boxes ticked. When I say the Weiss are more detailed, its not over detailed to the point where music sounds clinical. The Weiss just have greater detail which in turn makes music sound airier. I would have probably lived with the Sparkos for a long time. You dont see the Weiss opamps used for sale very often at all. So when the oppurtunity presented itself, local sale, price, and I had the money I figure I better jump on them.

Anyways I am glad I bought the Weiss OP2-BP. If someone was buying a Cymax Purifi 9040 and funds were limited and you wanted save a quite a few dollars, ya sure go for the Sparkos SS2590, they sound great. I guess that why I ordered the Cymax Purifi 9040 with the Sparkos. I wanted to see how I got along with it, I mean I wasnt sure that I would even like it. I am glad I got the Cymax with the Sparkos as it gave me a chance to live with and compare. The Weiss opamps fell into my lap, hard to refuse. If a person had the funds to get the Cymax with the Weiss, go for it, if thats the sound that you think you would prefer and work for you in your system. I guess ultimately it would be nice to get both Weiss and Sparkos. There might be cases where if you had a super detailed DAC, maybe the Weiss might be to much or not.

I lost count how many hours I got on the Cymax now, it must be 200. I think it has settled for the most part. It was sounding really great before and now with the addition of the Weiss, I think it sounds even better. Ya wow the Cymax Purifi 9040 with the Weiss opamps sure sounds good.

I am not sure what the link pages say, but if you are under the impression that you can use tea leaves or a ouja board to say how different opamps sound, you would be wrong. I like to form my own conclusions from real world experience. I tried these 2 different opamps and I am just giving my impressions. If anyone wants to really find out for yourself, I suggest you do the same. To rely on mystic devices or I heard it sounds like this or someone else say this, or that cant be true, if that is good enough for you thats fine. I bought the different opamps, I tried them and thats what I heard. I am not going to get you to try drink some coolaid and if you are happy with what you have that is great. If you dont have any experience, how can you advise. Not all people hear the same, if you did try actual comparisons, your conclusion may be different than mine or not. If we have to get into a big yes it or no its not it will just derail this awesome amp topic and ruin it for everyone.

I cant advise you on your gear, I dont know what it is. I likely dont have any experience with it. I am not telling anyone to go out and buy anything.. I said the base version of the Cymax Purifi 9040 is great. Some of my options that I got for it may not make any real world differences. I dont really care what it measures like even. I am listening to music and not measurements and thee Cymax Purifi 9040 sounds great. I happened to buy some other opamps and I am telling you what I heard. Now I didnt get anyone to hog tie me, blind fold me, wrap duct tape around my head and put an apple in my mouth while I listened...figured that would be unnecessary. I swapped the opamps and I could hear the change and I liked what I heard...take it or leave it.

I think it’s important to acknowledge that what you heard in a sighted, uncontrolled setting is very subjective and influenced by expectation or bias.

These kinds of impressions are personal and don’t necessarily translate into meaningful insights for others, especially without any controls in place.

Given those two facts, it’s hard to see how your personal experience offers value to the broader community. What would be far more helpful is if you conducted a proper, controlled blind test of the op-amps and shared that data. Of course, as we’ve seen time and time again, those perceived differences usually vanish under scrutiny.

You begin your comment by admitting you haven’t looked at the links I shared. That’s unfortunate -it suggests you're more focused on defending your position than being open to the possibility that you could be mistaken.
