Cupping hands behind ears while listening - WOW!

I see your jackass ears and raise you 'rabbit ears'!

Ooooops, wrong kind::facepalm:

These rabbit ears are probably ~40dB more sensitive than those of your jackass'!

(and I am not being facetious)
Full Disclosure: I am musing here.
I caught that >> Which?

He needs them be sensitive in order to escape being a snack for a stealthy kitty. For the donkey, a few dB down won't matter as much.

Whereas the donkey ears seem like they have been room-EQ'd by the use of hair folicles!
Audiophiles?

I've been spending a lot of time recently trying to optimize my stereo setup. REW measurements, speaker placement and toe-in degrees, 1 or 2 subwoofers, room treatment products, equalization...

But, the most revealing change (and improvement) was when I cupped my hands behind my ears while listening. Suddenly, there was so much more clarity and detail across the spectrum! It was really a veil lifting experience!

Some of you will probably think that this is a joke post, but I am absolutely serious.

What is the physical explanation behind this? Is it a kind of "treble boost" or is it more about removing sound reflections and getting more of the direct sound of the speaker?
You need a pair of these. Perhaps the best sound upgrade for their cost. But remember to take them off before you leave home, or you'll be the laughing stock of the neighbourhood!

Headphones are not a real listening experience. Quite unnatural to put the speakers against your ears.
Right on par with stuffing an orchestra into two boxes in one's living room, I'd opine*.
... or a small string ensemble, for that matter.

* yup - musing again, I am. In full disclosure. ;)

In another quantum of disclosure -- I don't like listening to headphones, either. But it's got more to do with the sense of isolation and the artificiality of the listening experience, as opposed to the sound quality per se.

That is such an eloquent and appropriate way of stating your displeasure: I'd steal it, if only I could remember it!
I usually resort to "You'd never catch me stuffing music in my ears!" pfffft

That's exactly why I like them! Plus I can play it much more loudly than I can get away with using speakers, and I can hear more details.
