What could be the real world impact of that increase in distortion at -42 dB? It is similar in magnitude as an unmitigated ESS hump albeit sharper, and last not least even those ESS implementations that had a hump had it from a much lower distortion floor.

What is the use of such a box? It is seemingly dongle sized but for 7.1?
If you use a DSP to create digital crossovers, you can use this box as a "multi-channel" DAC. I'm going to give this speaker a try to see how it compares to the Topping DM7.
In the past I've used an Asus Xonar MKII to distribute 8 channels to active XO 3-way speakers + 2 subs. There's lots you can do with 8 exposed output channels.

A cheap way to experiment with multichannel audio setups (although you need some software to actually decode the source to multichannel PCM) and digital crossover/sub integration. For real use i would prefer multichannel dac like DM7/okto/minidsp or multichannel transport with few dacs on it wihtout all those issues mentoined in the review

No, I definitely made sure it was line in. Even for mic I can't imagine why that kind of filtering would be useful.

To listen to movie and game sound in surround. There used to be 5.1 speaker sets you could get for your computer with analog input which you would hook up to the PC this way. Not sure if they still make them or have switched to USB input.
Cubilux makes a nice $35 outboard volume control in a very nice aluminum enclosure, nice feeling large metal knob, with an ALPS pot with a heavy and smooth action. I know it is an ALPS pot because I took the unit apart, because, you know, to check!

For me, I could definitely see this being useful with a desktop PC for A) 5.1/7.1 surround sound gaming setup using Windows sound or B) controlling a pair of DIY active crossover multiway desktop monitors using EqualizerAPO or similar software.

If the chip is indeed the CM6206, the ADC problem may also be related to (caused by?) the chip “intelligent noise reduction” feature.

By combining it with Cavern software that can control ATMOS, you might be able to create a special 4.0.4ch Atmos playback environment on your PC.
It would also be fun to buy a bunch of old surround sound systems from eBay and play around with them. (Fidelity is irrelevant for now.)
