I have a JBL S2S-EX passive subwoofer that I'd like to give at least 1kW RMS.
I can get this topology of Crown amplifier (the XLi2500) basically brand new for $484. Or I can get a used XLS2500 which is class D for $340. I have an external crossover via my Denon X4800H so the lack of cross over in the XLi means little to me. Both amps are basically 1,500W bridged into 8Ω which is the nominal impedance of my JBL. I'll never use either amp for anything other than subwoofer duties and I don't care about the weight. The money would be the tie breaker if the quality difference would not be distinguishable below about 80Hz.
Actually heat might be the tie breaker more than money though both are in favor of the XLS model as are ASR's review of Crown amps if I'm not mistaken.
Nevertheless, that old Class A > AB > D audiophile religion might be affecting me even though I came into this addiction with a Hypex NCx500 as my first amp and so aside from my two valve-signal- distortion-generators I will forever after be a Modern Class D acolyte. That said, I don't think I'm supposed to consider Crown class D to be anywhere near Hypex or Purifi level. (Even at 380W into 8Ω, right?).
Now is Crown a clear step above the Rockville D12 switching amp that's currently powering my JBL in bridged mode? I think so. I hope so or else this will be a waste of money. And as a fun aside, every AI that I asked said just using one channel of my Buckeye Hypex NCx500 would be better than the Rockville D12. That seems almost inconceiveable to me, but not untrue.
