Crown Class D for my JBL S2S-EX? (plus philosophical amp question)

I was about to go buy a Crown amp for this JBL S2S-EX [are they taking the piss with that model name?]. It's a $3,000 supposedly semi-pro audio (farm league?) subwoofer I got for $300 in visibly fantastic condition from a reputable private party I've done business with before. I decided to be cheap and got a Rockville D12 2-Channel Class D Amplifier with purportely "5000W Peak/1400W RMS" . That claim is for bridged into 8ohm the JBL S2S-EX's nominal impedance. The JBL's specs which I've pasted for convenience say 1.2kW RMS and 3.2kW peak. So, on paper, this Rockville D12 should be a relatively decent match that can't easily fry the driver. Now I think everyone knows Rockville's numbers are, as my nephew would say, 'super sus', but I figured if it's 900W RMS and can do bursts of 2-3kW, I should be impressed given that until I recently acquired a SVS SB16 Ultra, my most powerful amp was a KEF KC92. But even getting the line level voltage as high as I probably can, it just doesn't punch and if you look at the specs, this thing should punch more than deliver infrasonic rumbles, right?

And this raises a bigger engineering question I want to throw to the forum: Do you actually want an amp whose specs essentially match your speaker's RMS and peak values so theoretically you shouldn't be able to easily damage the voice coils with some blasting or ham-handedness with the remote?

Or do you want an amp that exceeds the speaker's capacity significantly? And if so, by what amount?

In my personal opinion, the absolute effortlessness of an amplifier operating well away from its limits is what really determines how clean it sounds. When an amp is gasping for air, everything chokes up long before hard clipping sets in.

So I'm going to dump this budget paper-weight and buy a Crown amp as soon as one shows up as "Used - Like New" or "Very Good" on Amazon. I've had fantastic luck with that route before and even once rolled the dice on some "Used - Acceptable" Klipsch RP-8060FA 2s for 80% off. The odds were good to me there as it was 'Acceptable' just because of some dings in the back and they appeared to never have even been fully unpacked.

But I digress. More importantly, as a Buckeye NCx500 owner, I would love a Crown full on Class D and not the AB with a switching supply, as they are heavy and won't sound any better, right? Curious what y'all would recommend. Also I don't mind drop shipping it to Amir if you want the fact it hasn't been reviewed yet to be part of your calculus.

But if you don't give a damn about advising how to power my hifi junk specifically, what do you think generally about going very extra on headroom versus nominal power matching? Does relative driver mass make a difference? The JBL uses a W1500H transducer with 15" (380mm) Kevlar-Kapok reinforced cone. The enclosure has 2 huge ports but I do have bungs for them.

I use Crown class D XLS amps for my diy subs. Power matching isn't really a thing. I would prefer more powerful than less powerful amps, and the max wattage rating of any speaker is more a vague guideline than a rule, I prefer to have the amp have much higher output than I need for any particular speaker. The volume control hopefully keeps you out of trouble. Did you come up with full t/s parameters for the JBL sub?

This applies to speakers as well. It makes sense to use a speaker and amplifier with matching power, but the listening power should be significantly lower.
 
There are others more knowledgable than me, but I've often heard that an underpowered amp driven into clipping is more likely to damage a speaker even if it's below the speaker's rated power handling.

I think that's essentially it. If all individual components are rated significantly higher than your listening levels, you'll be smiling.

That's mostly a myth, and doesn't apply to woofers in the first place.

I saw somewhere (maybe on ASR) a calculation of the additional high-frequency harmonics that occur when clipping occurs in the form of sine wave clipping. This is a very small amount of additional power, which is unlikely to burn out the tweeter. However, if the amplifier produces a large high-voltage surge at the input or after exiting clipping, things are not so clear-cut. But this is clearly a thing of the past, and such an amplifier is definitely not worth turning on and listening to at home.

Buy a lot of extra p[ower and you will be happy. Use the volume knob as the controlling feature. So more Bass with more power. What could ever go wrong?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. But wait, if dB is logarithmic, then yea 93dB at 1W, 1m seems like light work but if I'm 11ft away, I'm going to need a sh|t load of power, no? And aren't LF "dBs" and SPLs much less harsh at high levels? Because I enjoy my 3 minutes a day of ignorant bass but I rarely listen at over 70dB of HF and mids. Hurts my platinum ears.

93dB is fairly sensitive and at 100w would get pretty loud. Not sure what you mean by dBs being less harsh....

I'm not. Is just an academic point since you asked why I that 95dB could be more harsh to the ears at various frequencies. So maybe I like listening to most of the music at 60dB, but 90dB of low bass still feels weak to me. I doubt that massive of a difference would be the case but I think there's something to it.
 
You are correct in that 90db of bass 50hz and lower is not all that loud compared to mid range or highs. You can easily handle high spls in the deep bass region. There is a limit but it is probably around the 110spl range. You can hurt your hearing with extreme bass at extreme levels. I was young and dumb and put my head INSIDE a Bose pro audio bass bin 40 years ago and wow, I just about tore my eardrums! But that was a stupid thing to do and no one with an ounce of sense would do it. So, just don't be dumb like I was at a young age! :D :facepalm:

No, I just asked why anyone would play sine waves at that level, just seems a good way to try and damage something. :) We don't hear all frequencies "equally"; you can look at the Fletcher-Munson curve as well as later work along those lines....
