In this video,

the author (Benn Jordan, a musician/YouTuber) does a test with measuring equipment and claims to have measured that vinyl outgasses harmful volatile compounds. I'm not one to automatically believe anything posted online, but if this has any truth to it, a large percentage of the planet's population has been exposed for years. I'd like to hear what some experts (chemists, maybe?) have to say.

Silly stuff. Microplastics and dioxins in fat fish is much more of a concern. And all the rubber tyres in the world

My thoughts were that even if technically true, the amounts would be so small as to be inconsequential.

Lots of things in nature contain harmful compounds. For example, apple seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can turn into cyanide in your gut. This is also present in peaches, apricots and other foods. The green in a potato skin contain solanine, also a poisonous compound. And the list goes on and on. The important part of the equation is the dose. Many poisons have very positive uses -- botulinum neurotoxin, which can be deadly, is used as a medicine for cosmetic and other procedures.

The key is to don't do stupid things like eat a lot of apple cores or fail to peel the green skins off your potatoes. And don't lick your vinyl records.

If you work in a pressing plant or perhaps work on a dock unloading new vinyl all day, I think you should be worried.

But I would tend to agree that although offgassing nasty stuff isn't really unexpected, I doubt it's enough to do much damage in normal scenarios.

Maybe time to compare between the 'damage' vinyl does vs. what all those server farms for streaming do, plus lithium batteries, what goes in to making computers and what happens to them after their lifespan, etc.

I dunno the answer.

Just another youtube nutcase spouting BS theories.....

I have a hospital appointment tomorrow to get 1000 units of Botox in my leg muscles to ease the spasms created by spms, I get the injections every 12 weeks and have done for the previous 6 years, hopefully over the weekend I’ll start to experience some relief as the Botox takes effect

Best wishes to you!

Well, two wrongs don't make a right and two forms of pollution are just two forms of pollution. The existence of a greater problem doesn't invalidate pointing out a lesser one. Except sometimes in audio. ;)

I love the scent of freshly pressed PVC in the morning!

It's more of a throwing stones thing.

The guy is using mass digital streaming media to opine and bloviate about record albums.

There are VOC emission tests that can be performed to fact check such claims, but by common sense it compares little with the intake of plastics and metals in our food products, or even the out gassing of furniture that has been made with petrol-based products and glued fibre boards.

For some time (in my jurisdiction), new residential constructions have been required to have forced ventilation for this reason.

I wouldn’t be persuaded by this source compared to everything else around us.

There would be more off gassing from ones bed that some records...
