Coffee - do you and how do you consume it?

what do you guys think about the new Meticulous espresso machine? it's basically a lever pulled by a "robot" with full control of all parameters (and ofcourse there's an app)

g'morning from my coffee corner btw

Yes still very happy. It is not annoyingly noisy, completely acceptable to me. The biggest contrast is how well lagoon casa grinds light roasts. Niche zero is not good at that
Regardless of what people may say, there is a noted difference between conical and flat burr grinding. I don't claim any benefit of unimodal or whatnot, just that one application may yield a cup that you may prefer to the other.

Yes, indeed.
The amount of retention (using Niche Duo w/espresso burrs) also depends on the ambient humidity, as expected: Only about a 0.2gm difference on a 16.3 gm dose.

I've never attempted to purchase or pull (lever machine) espresso shots using light-roasts.
I've tried dark roasts but I equate it with more processing of the beans and I've convinced myself that the result is more acidic and/or more bitter (re: medium roasts).
Less roasting of the beans causes less size expansion and less moisture loss [think popcorn], resulting in denser individual beans and yield.
Makes the use of an accurate scale essential, rather than a scoop.
I use a scoop and only check my scoop calibration with a scale occasionally. I’m always close enough. But I’m not pulling espresso shots, either. The fineness of the grind for espresso seems to be related to the tendency of the plug to crack, according to my espresso-pulling buddies, but all that is too much for me to think about at 6AM when I’m still drooling on myself.

I don’t have enough tattoos or body piercings not to mention a suitable artsy kitchen to appreciate an espresso machine called “meticulous” or should that be “ridiculous”?

Both are conical. I could not notice the difference when I moved from a Eureka Mignon XL to NZ, so I don't really bother. For me a grinder that grinds well, very low retention and static is a winner. Taste profile is not important

Being an industrial design tragic myself, I'm intrigued by the form. And if my kitchen isn't up to scratch, I could make it so !! I'll probably wait until Hoffman's take before I commit emotionally.

After taking on the single-shot coffee workflow of the Niche grinder, I'm also noting the single-shot water workflow for this one. The possibilities for individually tailored artisanal waters on a per-cup basis await. I hope we are looking at zero retention of the aqueous kind. Wouldn't want to mix up my H2O flavour profiles ...

Firmware may not be the word you wanted, but regardless of nomenclature and itemization the total cost here looks like AU$2600 which is around the price of say Lelit Mara. I’m not seeing the price being a huge problem.

Firmware may not be the word you wanted,
Looking at some of the features you need the "software" for (Precision water heating, stop at weight) I'm gonna call it firmware. Probably more accurately features in firmware crippled by non payment. I am uninterested in this sort of pricing model for any device. Especially when there is no assurance they wont turn it into a regular payment model, like many vehicle manufacturers are now doing.

Certainly a one-off cost vs a subscription is another matter, the latter would be off-putting for sure. It does raise the issue with any product that depends on software having a potential point of obsolescence. Firmware (permanent software programmed into read-only memory) would be a better bet in that sense.

but double the price of the odyssey argos...

I'm wary of any kitchen appliance that requires an Internet connection to work.

Yes, internet/cloud-connected is basically the opposite of firmware, in software terms.

Pre-order price for Argos here looks like just shy of AU$2000. No need to worry about software though. Unless you get the digital Bluetooth pressure thingy and decide to use their app.

I don't use the bluetooth pressure thingy, but def vouch for the argos. have a pretty early one & love it.

Regardless of what you call it, if there's a chance of it turning into a subscription model to make espresso then it's a no go for me.

Not surprising, looks like a nice bit of kit.

NO. they show the "items" separately to reduce tax costs. you get some sort of activation code once you actually receive the machine
@xray there is no subscription . i double checked it with them. also, the whole software side of the machine is open source on Github
