Coffee - do you and how do you consume it?

Its Autumn. Here in Wine Country, we've already had some rain (which is nice). Winter is right around the corner and it will soon be time to start mowing the lawn.

Yet my SAD is kicking in.

I get my Seasonal Affective Disorder when I can't pull a consistent shot of Spro due to the humidity bouncing from 20%-85% RH and back every 2-3 days.

Grump, cuss, and more grump.

I've had one good shot in the last 3 weeks. And it wasn't today!

#first world problems

(Just had to get that off my chest. Thanks for 'listening,' guys.) ;)
I feel ya. On a brighter note, I received my DF83 yesterday and am in the process of breaking it in. It's a beast, I'm not used to shots grinding in 3 seconds to a fluffy mountain, no clumping whatsoever. No mess either. Only downside, it's LOUD. Results so far are great. I was able to grind super fine without any burr rub, it seems (without any actual testing yet) the alignment is just fine.

Very cool.
I've seen mention of the SPL differences between the different models depending on the motor type. The brushless motor is supposed to be more quiet.

But 3 seconds... Wow! Even 90dB is OK for 3 seconds. :p. My Lelit Fred is like 30 seconds of grinding, then I have to put the PF down and hold another little cup under the chute while I beat it like a misbehaving stepchild to get that last .5-1g out of the chamber.

How was your brew experience: did you pull any shots?

BTW, who did you order from?

Ordered from miicoffee as per @Odorb's suggestion, reviews also said they provide great support.

Brew experience: too early to say, I'm between bags so haven't had a chance to fully dial in and assess yet, but I'm loving the improvement to the process, much less fussy, messy and it's super fast. Pretty significant difference because like you, I was grinding for 30+ seconds which at 7 am feels like a f!@#ing eternity!

Amen bruddah! 7am, 10am… just don’t matter!

Ya, I’m looking at miicoffee. Turin and Espresso Outlet seem like the same entity as best I can tell. Nothing negative about that. But I like that miicoffee has an actual address in Seattle.

The point is simplicity, durability, reliability and longevity. No electric motor or gearing that can fail. And no need for electricity.

Mine has been reliable, and the power it uses is about 0.00001% of my total usage.

The deed is done. I should have a DF83V delivered later this week. Went with the open box option, plus I negotiated an additional fitty off over chat. They offer full warranty coverage for the open box options, too. Claim to be fully tested, as well.
*shrugs
At the very least, I may only need to run 9 pounds (not 10) of coffee through it to burn in the power cable.
:p

This will be the single most exciting thing to happen to my espresso situation since I bought the Sylvia back in '18.

Exciting!

I will finally explore the potential of my new grinder having just completed a deep clean of the group head, where I found some nasty surprises waiting on the other side of the shower screen. Didn't keep me from finishing the cappuccino I had just made, though.

Looking forward to your thoughts on the DF83V :)

It lands today, later this afternoon. Eager!

I'm deciding how may pounds of beans I should run through it tonight. O_o

Have you started being from yours yet? Thoughts?

I missed my Oct cleaning session and had 2 mos worth of ick to deal with when I cleaned earlier this month. Monthly is the bare minimum. Sometimes I feel I should run urn through every other week. I will say though, this was the first time I had to get a toothbrush out for my shower screen. The normal soak and scrub with the brush tool wouldn't get it clean.

In other news, we are getting our first seasonal soaking with what is predicted to be around 8-9 days of rain due to the "Bomb Cyclone" and "Atmospheric River." It's an old Barista trick to blame horrible shots on the weather... but I pulled 3 of the worst shots I ever brewed this morning. On the other hand, I could blame it on the grinder, too, acting up because it knows its days are numbered. :p

Now the only question I have is how do you check alignment on a grinder with BLACK Burrs. Will the Dry Erase Marker trick still work?

Hoffman has done a review of grinders under £250, he doesn’t think much of my sage :p ,

Are the DLC burrs actually black or are they just darker?
Just opened it up. Appropriate term would be ‘gunmetal…” so not black, but very dark grey. I think dry erase should show up on it.

Without taking the burrs out, gave it a thorough cleaning and reassembled.

Dry run, no beans…

This thing is whisper quiet!

Unboxing shots will follow.

Please post you review before Black Friday as I'm hoping it goes on sale :)
Initial impression is that it is well designed and put together. Taking it apart and reassembling it was easy and intuitive. Having watched a few vids, I knew what to expect yet nothing replaces that first-hand experience. It is utilitarian A.F. Yet within that boundary, fit and finish is very good.

I gotta get back to work, but I will follow with the unboxing porn soon.

Picked up 3# of beans to run through it, too. *shrugs Dunno if it really matters, or how much the original purchaser ran through it, but this should get it well on its way to being 'seasoned.'

Getting to the nitty-gritty:

Who doesn’t love a beer bottle for scale reference? I assure you all, this beer was absolutely consumed in the process of setting up the grinder!

I was warned to expect grinds in the chamber on the open box item page! They weren’t kidding. I figured they would open it back up and give it a quick vacuum though.
After I cleaned it up and ran some beans through, using the bellows after grinding, it did not have that much retention when I opened it back up.

In its new home, Lelit Fred on its way out.

Thus far, I drank one espresso with it.
Then, after having run 3# of beans through it and getting it dialed in over 4 explosively gushing attempts…

The bomb cyclone and atmospheric river killed our power!:mad:

So off I went to the cafe to finish caffeinating myself.

I will be continuing my consumption of espresso in a few more hours.

That said…

This machine is a beast. It absolutely chews through beans like mad. 3-5 seconds of grinding for 20 grams. I haven’t actually tried timing it, but it’s fast: faster than the pro Mazzers at the cafes.

As I noted before, the brushless motor on the Variable Speed model is absolutely quiet. Even when running beans through, it feels like it’s significantly more quiet than the outgoing grinder, and way, way faster.

While I haven’t had time to really get a new workflow routine, it is super easy and efficient compared to my old grinder. I pour my spritzed beans in the top, push the button, and it’s done. I am not using the dosing cup, rather dosing directly into my portafilter.

As advertised, the grind is fine and clump free. I am seeing lovely fluffy piles of grounds.

Quality of shot updates will have to wait until I get to drink some of it. As a machine, it does what it is advertised to do and does it well.
