Hello everyone,
I need a set of headphones for the Mrs. that are closed back and she wont use an EQ so must be out of the box in good shape.

In the reviews I see the AKG 371 meet this criteria but looks like it may be uncomfortable.

She listens with her IPhone primarily but I do also have portable headphone amps.

Any other suggestions?

Budget wise I don't have a number is mind so fairly open.

Thanks!!

Comfort is a highly personal thing...

Thanks, yes totally agree and in the end they may be the right call. This site being the ultimate resource is always worth a check nonetheless.

Thanks, reluctant to pick anything not reviewed here but will have a look. Essentially everything I have has been tested with high marks here and has been proven to be super valuable!

If you want to break the bank I like the Audeze LCD-XC out of the box - they feel great on the ears but they're really heavy, so comfort is perhaps iffy.

Hehe yeah those are amazing looking but she is tiny, I think there may be memes about it if she wears those beauties.

Personally, I find them very comfortable. But I have a rather big (wide/round) head.
Long hair or glasses also might cause trouble because of the dependency on a good seal (but this is a closed back thing in general).

EQ is indeed not necessary imho.

I have enjoyed my Focal Bathys. Over the ear, closed back, bluetooth and noise canceling.

Thanks yeah she is small but they may work well still.

FiiO FT1. They are completely new. 340 grams, $150 and real wood.

As an owner of the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X since the day before they were released, I can heartily recommend them. Comfort is superb, super light, excellent build quality, great price. As everyone agrees that everyone's hearing is different, for that reason I don't bother looking all that much in the response curves. A common review of these is the V shape and the "harsh highs". I understand the V shape (but not a criticism), but I don't agree regarding the highs. I must be the only person who loves the sound of cymbals/hi-hats etc, as everyone else seems to want to complain about hearing them! I don't find the highs too much at all, all I do is imagine a drummer sitting in front of me, and asking the question "Is this what i'd expect to hear?". Not once have I said "I wish they would stop being hit so hard!". The bass is great too. Low but controlled, and I don't find it "in your face".
These 'phones can be run off anything, so portable. They provide great sound isolation (16dB), to the point I just remove the cable and use them like NC's when commuting. Plus due to their response curve, are also great for movie watching too.
Other benefits, like I mentioned before, the cable is removable, plus the ear pads and head band can be replaced down the line too, so longevity is far better than some others that may sound better. Depends what you prioritise really at the end of the day.

The sound signature of the 770 Pro X definetely is a matter of taste. Not saying your taste is "wrong". But this makes it not the kind of "easy recommendation for everyone"-headphone.

But there is also the 700 Pro X. While I didnt buy them, I had these on my ears in an audio store. I liked them. These should appeal to a wide range of people.

By the way, Sean Olives research implies that on average, women tend to like V-Shape sound signatures less then men. But you cannot generalize this, of course.

I know this is a "science" orientated site, but perhaps when it comes to headphones themselves, we should stop getting so hung up on the graphs, and actually just listen to music on them. 140 reviews on amazon.co.uk, 88% 5/5 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/beyerdynamic-770-Pro-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0CQPJD8FK/
It's not like I don't agree with the point of this site, it helped me decide on getting the Topping D10s DAC and JDS Labs Atom amp. I'm just saying that hands-on experience is better than a graph. And out of interest, i'd like to know how many users on here have actually contributed towards the Harman Curve average if that's what they believe to be "correct" in the first place.

@Demmers
I am not an ideologue when it comes to graphs myself and I do not devaluate your personal taste. If you like the headphone, you made a good choice for you, nothing to argue against that. :)

But what the graph indeed does tell you that is a headphone which clearly goes for a heavily colored sound which surely has its appeal but which not everyone will enjoy. The person asked for a recommendation for a friend without any EQ necessary, and we dont know enough about that person to know if she will that specific coloration too. Sure it could be perfect for her but we were asked in order to reduce the risk that he buys something wrong. We would need more information about that person first.

Imagine you want to buy a present for a pen friend and this present is available in various colors. You have no idea which is your pen friends favorite colour, so it is likely a good idea to pick a color which is not too far out of the norm, even if you like it personally, unless you have a specific clue that the person will like it too. I pick this example because there are no "objectively good or bad colors".
