Classical ♫ Music only | Some you listen now or recently, some you love...

Jaroussky is the best at the moment and has been for a while imo.
Best Nisi Dominus interpretation ever

Had a chance to talk to Phillippe on one occasion shortly - and even in small-talk it is fascinating how deep he is in the music.

Got a couple of boxes today of sacred choral music, both for insane prices. One set is from Brilliant Classics, is all Bach, has the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Easter Oratorio and the Mass in B minor. 10 CDs, $5.98. There's some overlap with the "Sanctus" collection, which is fortunate as the missing disc from that set is duplicated in the Bach collection along with the St. John Passion, both featuring the Choir of Kings College Cambridge directed by Stephen Cleobury, and early music vocalists including Emma Kirkby and David Thomas, among others. The St. Matthew Passion is from 1994, the St. John from 1996. The Sanctus box, also $5.98, also includes Handel's Messiah featuring Cleobury and company, also recorded in 1994, Mozart's Requiem, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Verdi's Requiem and Faure's Requiem performed by a lot of other ensembles. The label is "House of Classics", another company reissuing relatively recent and often excellent performances and engineering with minimal packaging and fire sale prices, like Brilliant Classics does. I've only heard the first disc of The St. Matthew so far. It's excellent, I need to give these sets the attention they deserve.

I think I've tried all St John's and St Matthew's passion available versions on streaming....

Took me awhile to get into Bartok, but it's really compelling music IMHO, I'm now playing it often.
Wonderful playing by Solti and CSO, and very good SQ too

Just ordered this...

It should be in my hands in a week or so. I figured I'd start on disk one, then rinse and repeat till number 41. Might take me a little while.

It is remastered, and the sound is noticeably improved over previous releases. It can also be found on streaming (split into 10 albums).

Dvorak - Stabat Mater later today, looking forward. One of the best sounding concert halls, really privileged to live nearby and having a chance to attend regularly.

I think Hrusa is great for this specific piece - he knows it intimately, he will be re-united with his "old pals" in Bamberger orchestra, so I expect deep insight into Stabat Mater. Goosebumps ;-)

A masterpiece of religious musical drama, in a version brimming with emotion and contemplation.

This one I already have.
Not the very best interpretation but still very good and great recording quality.

Cantata for Easter Sunday. From the complete series of cantatas recorded by Gardiner in 2000 to mark the 250th anniversary of Bach’s death. I love these recordings.

Also, my favorite Bach Cantata.

While we are at it - next Wed, if anybody is around Vienna - still few tickets left.
New energy with new Orchestra [although lot of familiar faces]. Tempos are, well, bit extravagant at times, but his understanding of Bach and experience shines through and carries the whole thing.

I don't know if these readings are the most musically profound, but they are technically first rate, and the recording quality is even better. Excellent demo material.

Addendum regarding The Planets: Mars is well done, the rest of the suite is superb.

Working my way through everything Bach wrote, works I never would have listened to otherwise.
The easter oratorio was a real surprise, can’t believe I had never heard it before.
