Pure genius translated into music
Mozart: Fantasia in D Minor, K. 397

Being DG’s current house pianist put Seong-Jin Cho in the enviable position to premiere Mozart’s latest work

One of my absolute favourite acts in recent years has been Currentzis and MusicAeterna. The combination of precision, historically informed reading and pure energy just captivates me.

They’ve recorded the most devastating and convincing Tchaikovsky #6 I’ve yet heard, and their three da Ponte operas of Mozart put many revered household performances to shame.

I’m currently listening to this:

Two totally fascinating orchestral works by American composer Christian Wolff. Not “difficult” music but requiring close, thoughtful listening nevertheless to appreciate Wolff’s very original musical syntax.

I’ve been going back and forth between these two recordings and finding it instructive. The two soloists have distinctly differing approaches with Sinkovsky the more exciting and Galfetti the more beautiful. Neither of these should be passed over by anyone with any interest in Vivaldi’s music.
