Cheap second-hand sealed speakers

Hi everyone,

I just replaced my old Nad C320 which died. I acquired two Fosi Audio ZA3 (was a bargain, not particularly thinking of using them in mono, most likely I will offer 1 to a relative/a friend).

I had a few cheap speakers in my life, but my preferred ones are the KEF Coda III (both dead now) and my current KEF C42, that are very inequal.

I listened to ATC SCM40 once and I was amazed; and I saw a pattern: sealed speakers. I love their bass response. And placement will be much easier in my small flat (currently 30cm from a wall, not in the corners). Even if I don't have a lot of low-range on my KEF C42, I would like to find a good replacement to them, that is also sealed, with this dynamic/clean low-range response. I am listening to minimal house/techno, mostly.
  • What do you think would make sense on the second-hand market in France? (below 300€/pair) In particular, considering membrane/capacitor checks on old second-hand models.
  • And also, I was considering building some 2 or 2.5-way passive filter sealed DIY speakers during the winter, is it worth the hassle? (I have a good supplier of laser-cut Norwegian birch plywood, for what it's worth)

Thanks in advance!
Pierre

Sorry, good point: France. Updating the original post.

Thank you for the thread on new product sales. Not a lot of sealed speakers though :/

It's difficult enough choosing speakers for ones self, let alone for someone else. :)

MKZM's preference list might help you narrow down your search: https://sites.google.com/view/speaker-data/speakers/preference-ratings-graphs

Also, I wouldn't rule out ported speakers; you have the option to partially block the ports to tune the bass response somewhat, some ported speakers come with foam bungs for this purpose.

In addition, having speakers close to the wall, ported or not, isn't always an issue: https://www.genelec.com/monitor-placement
