Okay, I don’t know which other forum to post this in, but please advise if you have a better idea.

I already have a great DAC forwards set up, and a great streamer. But I’d like to have a CD player in the system. I see no point buying anything other than a cheap model which can act as a transport. More than happy with something small (not ‘full size), and/or it being a DVD or Blu-ray Disc player with an optical out. Indeed, compact/thin is best.

But my thinking is to not waste money.

CD

Oh BTW, I have a "tuner" with CD and Toslink out, not sure if available in the UK

For Bluray players, the small PC-type ones have no Toslink out, there is one "Hifi component" style from Panasonic available, but not really cheap

My used deck of choice is a Sony DVP-NS300 DVD deck. Has both Coax and Optical Out. Nice front panel controls so a remote is not required. Here is the U.S., these sell for anywhere between $15-30 in excellent used condition. Available in both black and silver. Happy hunting!

Buy used. Good player for.. well for almost no money at all these days. People stream movies these days so they have leftovers:
I bought a Sony BDP-S570 Blu-Ray a few years ago for $10 plus a replacement remote for it, $15 for the remote (if I remember correctly).
Works just fine with its digital out to external DAC.

Then a few years later I bought, mostly for fun because I got it for such a good price, a used Denon DBP-2012UD Blu-Ray:

The Denon is probably better on paper than the Sony BDP-S570 but I don't hear any difference with them when I use their digital out to external DAC. I've even blind-tested it. I don't hear any difference.:)

So many choices if you go to a thrift store. I have bought Marantz and pioneers for 5-10 euro.
The Tascam @NTTY recommended for 100.
All work fine, problems maybe fading displays, missing remotes etc.

Buy a blue ray player and set it to PCM.

The caution is that a lot of the cheaper BR players I have seen have HDMI and maybe coax, but rarely optical/toslink.

I recently got a used Oppo BDP-83, it's a great player, and it has both coax and optical out.
