Cerwin vega

If I get the size right it seems so,must have been rockin'..For a big room better than small 2-ways if you want some slam.
But nice bass is 4 of these :)
Those look nice. Never heard them, though. My system has a pair of these crossed at the 110Hz baffle step:

I looked at some of the Scanspeak 6.5" drivers as mids, but eventually went with SEAS W18s.

Oh, I remember them.

There actually is (are) a pair of C-Vs here. Given to me by a good friend, and used by our son through high school, so they get to stay for sentimental reasons. Their woofers, in fact, were the first drivers I ever refoamed (come to think of it). :)

Note the "dhorm" tweeter :)

They are still around, and as far as party, dorm, SPL for $ speakers, pretty hard to beat I'd think.

Those are really uhm, pink.

I believe they tend more towards the crimson or cardinal than the coral IRL -- although, that said, I haven't dug them out of their deep storage in the basement for... quite some time.

Cerwin-Vega! -- the name includes the Ausrufungszeichen (!)
The late Gene Czerwinski was responsible for C-V.
To his/their credit, C-V's zenith (so to speak... perhaps nadir is more technically accurate) were the bass bins they produced for SenSurround movies beginning (IIRC) in the 1970s (Earthquake).

C-V did some power amplifiers, too.

This catalog is a very cool artifact of (I would opine) a transitional era in American hifi, as it was becoming really mainstream (if only until the economic realities of the late 1970s and the rise of video in the 80s changed the playing field yet again). The format of the catalog was that of a gatefold LP record (i.e., really large) -- and the design and graphics were very much of their time. :)

I have a copy which I got on eBAY. Since it had been unstapled, I suspect it might have been the one that the owner of the above-referenced site (and also www.radioshackcatalogs.com) scanned for the site.

Why Doesn't anybody remember Cerwin Vega?View attachment 256346
I have these same speakers "SL-15" and the slightly smaller "SL-12" Both are excellent, beautiful looking, especially with the Grills On (Grill on are not as distracting when watching movies and the Grills also add to the speakers Lifespan). I added internal insulation to the SL Cabnets as there was none. I then plugged both bass ports in the rear as large 15" or 12" don't need ports as they created enough bass and ports creat a cancelation effect in very low frequencies. Anyway excellent speakers with inexpensive D.I.Y.

I have a pair of AT-15s that I found abandoned under an apartment building around 2006. The cabinets are a wee bit rough, but they are fine for my shop. I had the woofers refoamed shortly after I found them and then redid them myself a few years ago. I'm currently driving them with a Denon receiver, but will eventually change to the HK670 with DAC we discussed.

Hi
old old name

speakers that look terrible and are usually owned by people who want to annoy the neighbours... several streets away

i just checked out their website and they seem to be the same tasteless "design language" and it looks like MAX VOLUME via excellent sensitivty over every other criteria

i mean $169 a pair speakers... they sound like the embodiment of what I would often call one of my favorite brands...

JBL = junk but loud

cerwin vega looks like they're truly embraced that ethos
Hi

I am one of those who has posted often about the lack of clarity in JBL branding/marketing. "Junk But Loud" however is a very narrow view of JBL products... This is the company that produces some extremely well measuring speakers (some of those capable, yes of playing loud enough to deafen a person, permanently) , I can cite from memory, the M2, The Everest, The 4367, S9900, the 708p, 705p, the LSR 308, LSR 305, the 4309, etc and various other models of distinction and great objective (and subjective) performance, enough to fill up an entire website...

This characterization of JBL as "Junk But Loud", is perhaps tongue in cheek, but knowledgeable people both amateurs and professionals, could construct it as ignorance...

Cerwin-Vega also elicits this kind of prejudice. The measurements tell sometimes a different story one that begs for a review of a C-V speaker by ASR...

I did find some measurements from Soundstage (click HERE).. They aren't bad, Many speakers that are High End Audio darlings do not approach these...

FWIW, REG of The Absolute Sound did review them in TAS, and had to say this about the C-V XLS-215:
But if you are able and willing also to do some small EQ adjustment, the CVs become something really special. You have to sit in one spot vertically and horizontally, too, for best results. And you have to tolerate a small hint of the horn. But when you hear what these adjusted CVs can do both with big loud moments (try the Water Lily Mahler Fifth) and with refined textures, too (Julie London singing pretty much anything), you may well be as impressed as I am.

Yeah, I know, a subjective opinion...

Peace.

High praise indeed. :)

Sorry for the snarky comment. I couldn't help myself. As others have posted, CV did and perhaps still make fine "party" speakers.

I owned the MX250 and the MX400 when I was younger. Those were q special military issue. They sounded great. Could handle a lot of power and put out a lot of output and do it cleanly with no distortion.

These started me down the audio rabbit hole so to speak Lol.

The new ones the 215's don't measure bad and especially for home theater check off a lot of boxes.

Waveguide with decent dispersion? Check

Lots of cone area to move air no replacement for displacement? Check

Great midbass and dynamics especially when crossed over with a sub around 60hz? Check

Can handle a lot of power and can put out a lot of output clean without distortion?
Check

Behind an AT screen 3 of those for the proce could be a lot of fun

I'm not sure I ever actually heard a C-V. Saw a bunch when I was a kid, and they're common enough on eBay etc.
