It was more of a decades long running gag than hype. Constantly making fun of his overly stereotypical characters, including the rather wooden playing.

Chuck Norris' acting wasn't wooden, he forced actual wood to do his acting jobs, it was so scared that it acted so well, nobody noticed

I liked some of his films as I was growing up. Like Hero and the terror.
Once he got older and more political I aged as well, so I didn't exactly keep following his work:

A classic for us young people in the good old days to rent on VHS was this:

Would be considered complete junk now if someone saw it for the first time, but Chuck is Chuck so that in itself is a big bonus with the film.
