Frank Gehry Architect Age 95

Gehry was a leader in the Deconstructionist architectural style. He was one of the first to use CAD software used to design airplanes to design buildings.

In US architecture, the classical style gave away to Lewis Sullivan's base, rise, and capital style as it became possible to build taller with steel. Frank Lloyd Wright was a Sullivan student. Influenced by the Bauhaus, the international style by Mies van der Rohe continues to today. That would be musical minimalism. The Postmodern movement sampled just about everything in a modern mashup. Maybe that would be like hip hop and other sample-based music. Michael Graves was a leader in postmodern architecture. Deconstruction continued the rebellion, some of the buildings looking like they were falling down. Deconstruction might be akin to free jazz.

Among his many buildings is the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

"Gordon L. Goodwin (December 30, 1954 – December 8, 2025) was an American pianist, saxophonist, composer, arranger and conductor. He was the leader of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. He won three Daytime Emmy Awards, four Grammy Awards, and 25 Grammy nominations for his compositions and arrangements." (Wikipedia) (IMDB) (Discogs)

Gordon and his big band were pioneers in multichannel audio. If more jazz, especially big band, was available as multichannel streams, I'd upgrade my system. Jazz, however, is a genre that appears to resist multi-channelization efforts, for the most part. Even this pioneer, only had ~3 of his albums mastered for surround.

Here's an old post of mine from the 'Jazz Music' thread with more multichannel history. RIP to that Big Phat sound.

The recent post upthread here, led to info that Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band are important in the history of HiRez and multichannel audio recording. Their 1st album, 2002s Swingin' For The Fences, is considered the 1st official DVD-Audio release, and earned 2 Grammy Award nominations in the process.

Their next album, XXL, released in DVD-A and hybrid SACD, earned 3 regular Grammy Award nominations. XXL also earned a “Surround Sound Award, ‘Best Made for Surround Sound Title’”, 2 years before the Grammys began an official category for HiRez and MultiChannel audio releases.

I imagine Big Band in multichannel is awesome!

Wonder which vinyl version gives the most 3 dimensional sound stage? Just kiddin’. Discogs lists no vinyl release for either album. ;)

Please enjoy both of these raucous albums, in compressed, lossy, old school stereo.

I have a bad feeling that one of their sons may be the killer. I hope I'm wrong.

Edit: Sadly it is true.

The son had a well documented history of mental illness and addiction.
It is very tragic at this time, but it won't be too long before we move on to what will be the enduring memory and legacy of Rob Reiner, which is the laughter, the pure joy and fun that he brought into the world. A unique and inimical talent who will be remembered with love.

it's amazing , last night I actually thought: "sometimes you don't know who your hero's are until they are gone".. this morning his(Reiner) murder was the first thing that popped into my mind... this "celebrity" death hit me harder than anything I can recall , maybe even harder than Neil Peart , and his unfortunate death felt like it took part of me with him.... Rip Mr Reiner.. I can safely say you are already missed....

I was unaware Mr. Reiner began dating his future wife while filming When Harry Met Sally. Mr. Reiner later credited the budding romance with changing the ending in the movie to one where Harry and Sally end up together. I appreciated Mr. Reiner reserving this memorable line from the film for his actor mother, Estelle (Lebost) Reiner:

I'll have what she's having

So sad. Remember him all the way back to his "meathead" role in "All in the Family". If you understand that the Dick Van Dyke show was about his dad Carl Reiner being the head writer of Syd Caesar on "Your Show of Shows", you'll realize the Richie Petrie character on that show was portraying Rob as a child. So heartbreaking to think that the child who we all watched in that classic series would have his real world counterpart murdered by his own son.

Agreed.

It is my speculation, but I can imagine a young Rob Reiner visited the set of The Dick Van Dyke Show and Mr. Van Dyke was devastated to hear this news.

Rob Reiner's death has hit me harder than most celebritiy deaths usually do. The only others that have hit me as hard personality in the last 10 years were Tom Petty, Nanci Griffith, and Toby Keith.

In case anyone isn't aware and may be interested, there is a special on ABC tonight at 10 PM EST that I'll certainly be tuning into.

American songwriter-musician, Joe Ely 78

A live performance of 'Cool Rockin' Loretta'

EDIT - The NY Times has an obituary of Joe Ely that could be called 'entertaining'. Mr. Ely packed a lot of living into his life.
