Celebrity RIP Thread

"Tom Shipley of the 1960s and 1970s folk-rock duo Brewer & Shipley has died at the age of 84 (Yahoo).

Brewer & Shipley — made up of Shipley and Michael Brewer — were the pair behind the iconic stoner song of 1971 "One Toke Over the Line," which peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard charts. According to the NYT, the song was inspired by the duo's 'dizzying encounter' with marijuana at one of their gigs. A friend gave Shipley some pot at a gig in Kansas City and told him to stop at two hits because it was powerful stuff.

'Of course I wasn’t about to believe him and continued on,' he told It’s Psychedelic Baby in a 2011 interview, adding, 'I said to Michael, ‘I’m one toke over the line,’ and he broke into song. There was a refrain that night and some verses the next day, and that was about it. We were trying to make ourselves, and some of our friends, laugh,' he added. 'I never would have guessed what it would lead to.'"

Ah yes, the good-old days of radio.... When popular songs were inescapable. If you are boomer, you will now have this song in your head for the rest of the day.

"Hermeto Pascoal (June 22, 1936 – September 13, 2025) was a Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist. Pascoal was best known in Brazilian music for his orchestration and improvisation, as well as for being a record producer and contributor to many Brazilian and international albums." (Wikipedia)

Active since the 60s, recorded with Airto, Flora Purim, Miles Davis, but usually led his own 'Grupo.' Blended Brazilian influences with quirky and interesting jazz. His catalog is large, but a nice one is his last studio album from 2024. A tribute to his wife, it won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Jazz Album. RIP Hermeto.

Robert Redford

Sad. R.I.P. He did a lot for the art of cinema.

Redford went on to create the Sundance Film Festival, which became the country's largest festival for independent films. In 2008, Sundance exhibited 125 feature-length films from 34 countries, with more than 50,000 attendees in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah.

Plus I think he was a damn good actor. This movie is one of my favorites::)

And, probably, this is only the beginning. People will abuse anything. Because they can.
And AI, once "unleashed", is unstoppable.

In the USA back in the 1950s we used the phrase "Italian Bombshell" for certain buxom Italian beauties that began with Sophia Loren, passed on to Gina Lollobrigida and got applied to Claudia Cardinale (pictured below) during her 1960s rise to stardom.

Ms. Loren observed her 91st birthday this past Friday (September 20).
