Celebrity RIP Thread

R.I.P

The British rock guitarist John Sykes, who played with Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy, has died aged 65.

A statement on his website said Sykes "passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer".

_________
Thunder and Lightning is the twelfth and final studio album by Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy, released on 4 March 1983. Guitarist John Sykes was hired to replace Snowy White after 1981's Renegade, and Sykes helped to provide a heavier sound and guitar tone than Thin Lizzy had used on previous albums.

Here John Sykes goes all in with a really good solo on a song from that album: :D

I saw Thin Lizzy in 1983 and John Sykes provided a much needed shot of energy to the band at that time. It's a shame that Lynott couldn't keep it together. RIP Mr Sykes

I remember my brother telling me to go see Eraserhead when it came out, it’s great he said I’m going to see it again, come with me. So I went with him and since then to this day it’s still the weirdest movie I ever saw!

Van Alstine, one of the last great tube amp designers and engineers, right up there with Danny Von Recklinghausen.

I don't know if he is considered a celebrity on this forum, but Frank Van Alstine passed on January 29.
Wow, I did not know that. I spent a number of hours talking with Frank way back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, rarely since but he was quite a guy.

It has been expected for some time, but I am still saddened. I purchased First Take in 1972 and it had a profound affect on me.

She started with the ambition to be a classical pianist, but was told, like Nina Simone, a black woman cannot be a classical pianist. She then studied opera and may have been a great opera singer, again told black women cannot be opera singers.

Recently I have been re-listening to her early albums. To hear I Told Jesus or Bridge Over Troubled Water is to listen to one America's greatest singers. The arrangements may be a bit dated but the voice is amazing.

I found myself listening to her Duet album with Donny Hathaway , enjoying her soulful voice and making plans to listen to more of her music as I'd not done for some time only then to click on this thread and see she'd passed away just as I was rediscovering her . It was a kick in the nuts.

Over the years iv often found myself returning to her albums , especially the earlier ones, What a talent and what a lady .

They don't make them like that anymore .
