Robin Lumley, keyboardist for 1970-80s jazz-fusion band Brand X, passed. Begun as a Phil Collins (Genesis) side-project, also included bassist Percy Jones and guitarist John Goodsall (RIP). The albums Unorthodox Behavior (1976) and Moroccan Roll (1977) are fusion classics. I saw them twice in a shoe box called The Golden Bear, in Huntington Beach, California. Jones and Goodsall were quite an under-known pair. RIP Robin.

Renown session drummer and bandmate Jim Gordon, passed recently. A member of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, co-writer of Eric Clapton's Layla, he died amidst a 40 year incarceration. See links for more info.

Not many live performances on YouTube, found one with decent sound. The 2nd video features his drum solo in Harry Nilsson's Jump Into The Fire, set to a bit of on-screen psychedelia, drum bashing at about 4:00 in. RIP to a troubled soul.

Jim Gordon, drummer, dead at 77.

Another musician that if I saw on the players credit list on the back of an album guaranteed quality.

I haven't listened to it in decades but the drum solo on Derek and the Domino's Live album was a thrill.

Legendary tuba player Roger Bobo, one of the greatest to have ever lived. Tubist for the Royal Concertgebouw from 1956-1964 and the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1964 to 1989. Recorded a series of hugely influential records, changing the way tuba players performed modern literature. Studied at the Eastman School of Music and taught at universities in the US, Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, and England. Aside from all that, he impressed Doc Severinson when he performed on the Tonight Show. But this performance of the Galliard Sonata No. 5 impresses me more:

Roger Bobo, dead at 84, RIP.

Rick “celebrity among tuba players, at least” Denney
